Hotel in Nice

Does anybody have any suggestions for a hotel in or near the "old Nice"?

Is it too much to expect to find some place decent for 70-90 E for two people?

Have never been in France before - but thought Nice might be a good place after a week in Paris during April.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

Would also be interested in any suggestions for a reasonable hotel or "B & B" in Villefranche - as an alternate place to stay?

Have you tried checking out hotels on venere.com? Good site, especially for budget hotels.

It may be just a bit above your desired price, but Le Grimaldi comes highly recommended and is on my list for a place to stay in Nice.

Nice is a wonderful city, by the way.

I was longing to stay at La Grimaldi in May but they were booked for the days I wanted. Too bad because it came highly recommended in a book called "Charming Small Hotel Guides" and it sounded lovely.

Hi Meg-
We stayed at the Mercure on the main street along the beach. Old town and the Cour Salyeau (sp.?)(market square)was just behind us. It was very close to your price range. The rooms were small but location was great and the front desk staff was wonderful. We didn't eat breakfast there because there was a Pain Quotidien just around the corner and we ate there each day. We loved the location and Nice. Have a great trip. There is another Mercure farther away. This one is by the Opera. Carol

It's the Mercure Cours Saléya--we walked past and thought it looked very nice, and the location is fantastic. Unfortunately, there's no elevator, which ruled it out for us, but I believe there are only 2 floors in any event. Judging from the web site the rooms are quite prettily decorated.

As for breakfast, Le Pain Quotidien is one of the best places to go. It's just across the street from the entrance to the underground parking lot at the Cours Saléya.

Hello Underhill or CarolJean, do you have a website for this hotel? I did a quick Google and couldn't find it.

Thank you.

Yes, the Mecure by Old Town IS a great location, and on the main street across from the beach. We stayed there one night"many", about 20 yrs ago, when we met our daughter who was teaching overseas. I remember the room for three had a pull out bed "downstairs" and then up a "ladder/steps/loft was the double bedroom....the bath being downstairs. (it wouldn't do for us NOW, but was fine then and we were there such a short time.) We had a car, and apparently had easy parking, but don't remember..It was very easy walking to many areas of Nice...really a lovely city.

Hi again
Go to Mercure.com Click on Nice, it is the Mercure Nice Marche aux Fleurs. Good luck, CJ

Thanks very much for the info - I'll certainly check into this.

I have also stayed at the "Mercure Marche Aux Fleurs" and was happy with it. I usually rent an apartment in Beauliue sur Mer but last February on a week-end trip I stayed at the hotel.

You can also access the hotel's information on the main Accor Hotels web site.

I stayed at Le Grimaldi a year ago. A lovely hotel. I was quite surprised that the hotel was not mobbed; a charming boutique hotel with large bed room and also a large bath room at a good price (although not in your price range.)
The hotel staffs were very helpful. Only bad experience was two loud talking, ever complaining American couples in the breakfast room.

The location is about half way between the station and old Nice. So while it is not in old Nice, it isn't that far on foot.
