Hello Could anyone please recommend a hotel in Nazare, Portugal

Marie, We stayed at a very nice hotel on the beach in Nazare last November. Believe it or not, it was very hot and we needed a hotel with air conditioning. I'll check my records for the name and address and repost the info. The hotel location was excellent, right on the beach promenade. The room was well appointed and had three small balconies (one overlooking the ocean, and two on the side facing the main pedestrian square and the rock face of Monte Sitio. It was definitely a room with a view! I had a list of the other hotels in Nazare proper, and none compared to this one. (Some of the other hotels we looked at were pretty sad.) This was our second trip to Nazare---we really like the town, and especially the friendly locals ---always dressed in their unusual, traditional costumes. What makes it so special is that none of it is a "put on" for the tourists---this is their daily dress and simplistic way of life. I can give you some other hints on the area, if you like.

Marie, The hotel I referred to was: Hotel da Nazare Largo Alfonso Zuquete If you go to: http://www.maisturismo.pt Then click English, and enter Nazare in the city request. Tthe Hotel Da Nazare will be the first to pop up. If you click on the hotel name, the next screen lists the hotel, address, phone, fax, and e-mail----along with all the hotel's amenities. Unfortunately, they don't have an actual "website" that you can see the rooms. They were bright and cheerful, light wood furniture, huge closet, good lighting, lots of outlets, and a small but modern bath. On arrival in the room, the desk clerk or bellman will show you how to regulate the A/C--a rather sophistcated, digital thermostat. A very nice breakfast buffet was served in a glass-enclosed (second floor) dining area, which faced the beach. The hotel offers a private garage area, away from the hotel. This is a blessing in crowded Nazare, with it's narrow streets. The bellman will take the car to the garage and bring it for you if /when you need it. We had dinner in the restaurant one night, and the meal was tasty and well-presented. Lovely wine selection--and great desserts. I would definitely request a corner room on an upper floor. It is worth the extra few dollars to get the beach view with good west sun---and then be able to shut off that balcony and still have two others facing the square and Monte Sitio. The wide beach is just across the street. While in Nazare, you must go to the Sitio for the gorgeous views down over the town and coastline. There are also some nice chapels on the mountaintop. About two blocks south of the hotel, on the beachside street, is an amazing shop that sells very unusual and high quality handcrafts, household furnishing accessories along with linens and some tourist souvenirs. Don't miss this place---I've bought tons of Christmas gifts there the last two trips. Very good quality and moderate prices. The proprietress speaks great English. As to the other poster's recommendation for Alcobaca. I heartily second it!! We have been there twice. Great little town. The Monesteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaca is special. It holds the tombs of Dom Pedro and Dona Ines. Don't miss the kitchen and the refectory! Alcobaca has the best selection and prices on ceramics of all the towns we have visited in Portugal. There are also some very good wine and port shops where we found brands that are unavailable in other areas. One km east of town is the National Wine Museum---with vats, presses and wine samplings. The town also has some very good restaurants. Last trip, we overnighted there in the Challet Fonte Nova, a gorgeous 19th mansion with a lovely pool area. They have only six doubles in the main house, so early reservations are definitely required. Lots of US company executives stay there while on extended visits to the nearby ceramic/porcelain factories. This place was exceptional --the furnishings were exquisite and the staff friendly and formally trained.
