Hotel in Naples
 

I'll be arriving in the early afternoon and flying out the next morning. Suggestions appreciated. I don't know if proximity to the airport is a concern or not. I'll be taking a cab.

Hi Ron: OReilly (aka GER) just went to Naples this month and had looked into the following hotels and rates. I am not sure when you are going, but perhaps this can help you out:

Parkers Grande: 168.00 EUR http://www.grandhotelparkers.it/en/index.html

All of these hotels, with the exception of the Parkers Grande, are located in the Chaiai district of Naples, near the Piazza Municipio and the port area. Aside from a cab, it is easy to catch the #1 bus/tram from the Chiaia district into Naples Centrale train station (Piazza Garibaldi). The Parkers Grande Hotel is located very near the Vomero district, with its proximity to the San Martino church/museum, Villa Floridiana, etc. Others concur that the Parker's Grand Hotel is the best selection and only 500 yards away from the Piazza Amedeo metro station. You could easily take a metro to Napoli Centrale train station for area day-trips (Salerno, Pompeii, Ercolano Scavi, etc). This saves you the cost of a taxi.

Last year I stayed in a small hotel off Via Partenope, in the Chiaia district (along the waterfront, adjacent to Piazza Vittorio and the Villa Communale), and was close to the 3 hotels in your list: Palazzo Alabardieri, Hotel Majestic, and Santa Lucia. I passed the Santa Lucia on my daily walk down to the port and thought it was very elegant, like a grand dowager. While the rate was considerably less than your 150-200 Euro budget, the views out of my seafront window overlooking the Bay of Naples can't be beat.

I travel "budget", but never feel as if I am missing anything. The hotel property I stayed at is "Le Fontane al Mare" located at Via Niccolò Tommaseo, 14, Chiaia, Napoli (011-39-081-764-3811). It is across from the beachfront and Castel dell'Ovo, and next to the Villa Communale (lovely park, Naples Aquarium is there too). The hotel is actually up on the 5th floor of a public building and you pay 10c to ride the elevator up (or you can walk and get plenty of daily exercise!). It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the seaviews more than made up for the less-than-posh facade. Likewise, I felt very safe walking around the area at night to and from restaurants, cafes, etc. with my little child. Even went to the beach in the evening (across the street!) There is a great pizza restaurant next door with reasonable prices, as well as some terrific seafood places nearby. The room rates for a single is 60 euros, a double is 100 euros. All front-facing (ocean view rooms) have balconies and fantastic seaviews of the Bay of Naples and up towards Mergillina, Posillipo, etc.

Access to the hotel is via the #1 tram from Piazza Garibaldi (Napoli Centrale Station), there are stops in the adjacent Villa Communale, as well as the block over from the hotel.
