Hotel in Munich & Day trips out of Munich

I'm interested in a moderate price hotel ($100-$150) for three in Munich. It would help if the staff knows a little Enlish (we know very little German). Do you have any suggestions? Also can you recommend any day trips out of Munich? Thanks

I just made reservations at the Hotel Siebel for this summer; it was recommended by some posters on Rick Steves' webpage. E-mail me if you are interested in their phone number (I called to make the reservation; then I faxed them the credit card info and they faxed back my confirmation.) English-speaking staff :-). Day trips: Dachau is such a moving experience, I would highly recommend it. I've been there twice, and I am taking my daughter there when we go in July. Rothenberg (medieval city) is fabulous; for more info on this, visit Rick Steves' page. It's a fairly easy drive. The churches and the city square are fabulous. It is a walled city, so you can walk the perimeter. Have fun!

Check out the Hotel Uhland. We stayed there 2 years ago, and since then many people have also recommended it. You can do a search on this site, and they have their own internet site. Great location, nice rooms with goose down duvet's and great breakfast. Denise

My choice for a daytrip from Munich would be Ludwig's castles, Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. A better investment of time than Rothenburg I think, though Rothenburg worthwhile in its own right. I have reservations for June at Hotel Blauer Bock, Sebastianplatz 9, 80331 München; Fax: 089/23178-200 160DM (just about $80) w/breakfast, w/bath. No credit cards. This hotel was recommended to me by a friend. It's very close to the Viktaulienmarkt. My friend states that the rooms are nice, nothing fancy. I had also written to two other hotels that I read about and received their prices: Hotel Am Markt, Heiliggeistrasse 6, D-80331; tel: 089/225-014; fax: 089/224-017. No credit cards. "160-170DM" w/breakfast; Harald Herrler - owner. 33 units, 13 w/bath; "Popular Bavarian hotel in older section" Basic, modern, neat, trim, small rooms. Frommers '99 and Rough Guides. We're doing a day trip to Bertchesgaden. We'll have a car for most of our trip. Munich will be our final destination. I know that the above suggestions will be great day trips. I purchased the Day Trips Germany book and there are many day trips to choose from Munich. It's a great book! When will you be in Germany? Have a great time. I'm looking forward to our time as it will be our first trip to Germany.

There are a number of daytrips to do from Munich. Here are the ones we took a few years back when we stayed 6 days in Munich. Booked a tour to go to Neuchwanstein(SP) & Linderhoff Castles. Booked the tour because for us, at the time, it was the easiest way to go. Then 1 day we took a bus (a cross between a tour & public transportation) along the Romantic Road. This was covered by our Eurail pass, & the bus stopped in 2 or 3 places for an hour or so. Then took a train back to Munich. A number of people were doing the same thing that day. Our third day trip was take the train to Salzburg, about an hour away - through the Alps. Walked around Salzburg, visiting the Old town area, Mozart's birthplace, some of the churches, & the Castle - which was a highlight for me. Then train back to Munich. There are many more daytrips, but these were the ones we took via public transportation.

K.A.S- I hope this works. It's the second time i've tried it . Enjoy Munchen and hoist one for me! Here are some pensions relatively close to the Bahnhof. They all have doubles with and without a bath in the room. Of course all with bath are more expensive. The first one is closer to the Deutsches Museum (maybe 1 KM) while the rest are closer to the Bahnhof but 2-3 Km from the Deutsches Museum. Almost all are in the 80-100 Dm range for a double without bath. The bath is usually down the hall and it is usually free. Those with in-room baths go up about 25 -35 % in price. If you get there before lunch I would venture to say that you won't have any problem getting a room (except during Oktoberfest). The best place to exchange money is a small office next to the Las Vegas casino . It is on the street (Bayerstrasse) which runs east toward the Stachus as you go out the south door of the train station. The TI is on your right as you go out the east exit of the train station. The TI also has a room service. Get a good map at the TI. The TI has all of the info about tours to the castles. The best are Nueschwanstien and Linderhof. It will be an all day trip on the bus. However, since there are 3 of you, it would be cheaper to rent a car one day than to take the bus tour. Also, you could easily go to the Wieskirch and the Abby at Andochs with a car. Hertz, Avis, Europacar, etc, all have offices in the Bahnhof. If you rent, make reservations in the states before you leave. It is very expensive to make car reservations once you are in Europe. The other alternative to a bus tour is to catch the train to Fussen and spend one night there. The TI center in Fussen can get you a pension close to the Bahnhof and tell you how to catch a bus to Nueschwanstien. Alternatively, I have heard of people taking a taxi from Fussen to the castle. It's about the same as the bus for 4 people. I've attached a little information on Munich that might help. I've never been to Dachau and have no intention of going. I would much rather spend time in the Marianplatz or the Hofbrauhouse. You can catch S2 to Dachau. Things to do in Munich You need at least 1day in Munich to see the Glockenspiel at the Marienplatz at 11 AM and go to a biergarten to eat. Also, both the old (Alte) and new (Neue) musuems (Pinakothek) are worth a few hours if you are into museums. A walk north on Ludwig Strasse in Schwabing at dusk is also interesting. Just go north on Wein Str. (on the left side of Marienplatz as you face the City Hall (Neues Rathaus) where the Glockenspiel is) to Leopold Strasse. Stop at Munchner Friehiet and catch the U-Bahn back to the middle of town. Englischer Garten is also nice if the weather is good. Chinesischer Turm is a nice biergarten to rest at in the Englischer Garten. If you opt for a second day in Munich, you might choose between a half day at Dachau or Schloss Nymphenburg or the Deutsches Museum. The Deutsches Museum is dedicated to technology, old & new. The pedestrian zone between the Bahnhof and Marienplatz is also worth a stroll. It's easier and quicker than the walk through Schwabing described above. A day trip to Salzburg is very easy from Munich. It's about 1 ½ hours maximum each way by car or train. Berchtesgaden is very close to Salzburg (25 minutes by car). I believe Garmisch is easier to get to by train from Munich than Berchtesgaden. Garmisch is also much larger. Rothenburg is about 2 to 2 1/2 hours by car but you would be spreading yourself too thin to cover Rothenburg, Munich, Salzburg/Berchtesgaden, and the castles in 7 days. An aquaintance of mine did the castles, a 1 day bus trip to Salzburg, and the rest in Munich on a 7 day special in August of '99. He said the guide on the bus trip wasn't legally allowed to provide much info after they crossed the border into Austria, so he would do the train next time since it is much cheaper.
