Hotel in Munich
 

My husband and I will be in Munich for our honeymoon in May 2006. We are looking for a hotel approx $100 -$125 a night. Our only stipulations are a clean room with an ensuite bathroom. We want to stay in the downtown core where we can walk to most attractions. Any suggestions???

I'll top this for you and hope you get some suggestions. The only hotel I have experienced in Munich is Le Meridien, right across the street from the main train station. I paid 125 € this past May (though I have seen it on discount sites for as low as 99 €). It is fairly new, about 3 years old and the room was very nice, modern, large marble bath, sitting area, desk, plasma TV.

We always stay (well nearly always) at the Hotel Amba, right across the street from the train station & about 2 blocks from the ped. zone. It should be close to your price range & they have a great breakfast. www.hotel-amba.de (I think).

I've stayed at LeMeridien several times and agree that if you can get it at a discount such as through HotelBook or some other discounter then do so. It is well-located for public transport and within walking distance to the Marienplatz, etc.

Another possibility is the Hotel Acanthus and Ira often recommends the Hotel Uhland.

Have you looked at the Platzl...which is, I believe, not air conditioned (they keep saying they'll offer you a fan) which is right AT the Marienplatz essentially?

With the public transport system in Munich, assuming you are willing to use it, there are LOTS of possibilities within your price range.

A word of caution: the last time LeMeridien was discussed here someone brought up the "fact" that it is in a "seedy" neighborhood....probably because of the many enthic take-out places near the RR station and that sex store across the street. Up to you, but there is a much larger sex store, the Beate Uhse extravaganza right on the way to that Fodorite holy of holies, the Marienplatz, so take it all for what it is worth.

I also recommend the Hotel Uhland. It's a converted mansion, across from the Oktoberfest park, on a relatively quiet tree-lined street. So it has an old, elegant feeling to it. The breakfast included is a bonus, and very nice. Our room was a 'family room', so was quite large. And our bathroom was brand new.
It's not in the core of downtown, but we did walk to Marianplatz and back-- a long walk but quite pleasant. The train station is about 10 minute walk, which we did several times. Also, the Hotel Uhland has free bikes to borrow and it's fun to ride down along the river. And there are good restaurants/pubs in the neighborhood to walk to.
Service there is very friendly and personal. Be sure to tell them it's your honeymoon!

Its a little higher than your price range but I loved the Hotel Advokat. It is a nice modern place with good staff and bright rooms. Their breakfast buffet is also excellent. The hotel has no air conditioning but you may be ok without it in May.

Another note,

The Advokat is on the U-Bahn line which services Munich Airport so its easy and cheap to get to!

Our favorite is the Platzl, just a block from the Marienplatz and a very nice hotel with large rooms.

I stayed at the Anna hotel recently and liked it. It's kind of cool and they have a nice breakfast.

also, for booking hotels in Germany try www.hrs.de which I find often to be the cheapest.

I also have stayed @ & liked the Uhland, but it is a bit farther away (unless you care to hop on the bus) than some of the others mentioned. It would be my second choice (also a bit cheaper than the Amba as I recall).
