Hotel in Munich
Hi,
We are traveling by train from Salzburg to Munich at the end of May.I have been looking for a hotel, and most of them are over $250 a night for 2 of us. Is that common? Anyone know of anything better for less? Nv Mike |
>Anyone know of anything better for less?
Yes, many! cheaper hotels on www.hrs.de |
take a look at www.cheaprooms.com...I have found a couple of hotels that look okay for not too much over $100 US/night...how really good they are is another story but they don't seem to be dives.

I am surprised with the terribly weak dollar, that more people are not aware of the Priceline option....
Yes, you bid without knowing the hotel...BUT -you can check on biddingfortravel.com what the recent wins have been, so you know how much to offer, and what the likely hotel will be -you save TONS. Recent wins in Munich have been around $70!! Compare that with the $240 you mentioned -These are nice hotels if you bid in the 4* category...like the Renaissance or Marriott etc. I got a brand new Suitehotel in December for about $68/night which had a bedroom, living area, kitchen with microwave and fridge...unbeatable, quiet and comfortable. About 12 min from Marienplatz. It is one of the good ways in Europe to make your dollar go a lot further. Rouss |

Shhhh Roussillon!!! The less people that take advantage, the better the rates for you and me! :$

Try Hotel Schlicker, right in the center of downtown Munich.

We liked the Hotel Blauer Bock:
http://www.hotelblauerbock.de/preise.htm Its website is only in German but they can handle English emails and phone calls. It is near Viktualienmarkt about 2 blocks from Marienplatz. The breakfasts were very good and the folks were nice. Regards, Gary |
For several years I have used the Hotel Astoria in the Schwabing District of Munich, which is north along Leopoldstrasse. It is about 4 U-Bahn stops from Marienplatz on the U6 line.
The hotel itself is located on Nicolaistrasse about 100 yards east of Leopoldstrasse. It is near many stores and, best of all, two gelato places. The staff members at the front desk all speak good English and have in the past been most helpful. The breakfast at the hotel is top quality with a high degree of variety. The rooms of course vary in size. We get one that overlooks the area inside the block of buildings and it is relatively quiet. The prices are higher it seems this year, and will be close to $200 because of the pitiful condition of the dollar. |
Thanks to all who answered about a hotel in Munich. Now, I am confused about what area to stay in. Is it easy to get to a train station from most hotels?
Thanks, nvmike |
Munich is fairly laced with interconnecting Sbahn and Ubahn lines that will take you to the main train station. Hotel Blauer Bock near the Marienplatz Sbahn/Ubahn stop, just two stops from the main station. We actually walked to the main station (15 minutes) from the hotel on the day that we left.
Here is a map of the Sbahn/Ubahn lines. It is a bit confusing but very useful with of study. http://www.munich-info.de/travel/mvv_en.html Regards, Gary |
We also stayed at the Hotel Blauer Bock last fall and found it OK for the price. It is not fancy, but adequate, and very well located in the Marienplatz area. The market was just around the block and lots of fun. Try for a room above the garden, ours was in the back overlooking the kitchen-not the best of sights and sounds. Breakfast was nice. The owner wasn't particularly friendly but the rest of the staff was. Make sure when you take the trains that there is not a strike going on. We were headed toward the Marienplatz station when we saw on TV something that said strike. Found out that the trains to the airport were on strike only that morning. Ate the tickets that we bought the night before. Wound up taking a cab to the airport. Maybe that's rare, but it was our experience.

If you would like a hotel very near to the train station, I have been staying at Hotelissimo Haberstock since 1983. It is a 3*, very clean, wonderful breakfast, and all staff speak very good English. It is across the street from the train station on Schillerstrasse. There is an internet cafe also just across from the train station next door to the post office.
