Hotel in Milan near Linate

We will be flying into Milan at 6:00 or so in the evening after traveling from California with our one-year-old and our three-year-old. Obviously they will probably be tired and cranky, and we thought it might be easier to find a hotel close to the Linate airport to stay for a couple of days until we drive to Verona. On the way back we will have a similar issue--our flight leaves at 8:00 am so we'll need to be close to the airport, again for two nights. Can anyone recommend a hotel that would work for our family? If we do this, will there be public transportation to the city center?

Linate airport is a mere 7 kilometres from downtown Milan, and is connected by airporter bus to the central train station every 30 minutes. The bus ride takes about 20 minutes. You're much, much better off staying in a hotel downtown. An 8:00 a.m. departure out of Linate is not a problem: the first airporter bus to the airport leaves at 5:40 a.m. Fare is 4.00 Euros. Tickets on board.

How much hassle would it be to transport the two kids and the rental car downtown, though? No big deal, or a hassle? And if we go downtown, anyone have any recommendations of hotels there?

I work with a company based not too far from Linate. The area is fairly industrial. I can't think of a hotel out at Linate that I would recommend. When I'm there on business, I usually stay in town.
Why do you need to pick up the car immediately on arrival? If you are going to spend a couple of days in Milan, why not postpone picking up the rental car until you're ready to hit the road?

I actually live in Milan - moved here from Florida 5 months ago. Linate is a very industrial area - public transportation is great in Milan. The trains and trams will take you anywhere you need to go, relatively quick and very inexpensively. I live right near the central train station and there are several good, family hotels nearby - there is the Westin Palace and two Jolly hotels nearby - a bonus is that the big public gardens (Giardini Pubblici) is within walking distance to these hotels and has playgrounds, bumper cars, a carousel and plenty of room to run. If you pick a hotel, I'd be happy to give you a thumbs up (or down).
