Maggie, try the Antica Locanda dei Mercati (SP?). It's listed in Fodor's Hotels of Character and Charm and comes recommended from other sources as well. I've booked it for May and will report back when I return. They have an e mail address and are very quick to reply. It's also on a small pedestrian only street right in the historic center of Milano and their standard rooms for 2 are 200,000L.

ANTICA LOCANDA MERCANTI: Via San Tomaso 6, 2nd fl. Milano. Tel. 02-8054080. Fax: 02-8054090. E-mail: [email protected] (16 rms., all w/toilet & bath or shower.) 185,000-315,000L (95-162E) single/double; 270,000-320,000L (138-164E) triple. Small buffet breakfast (7:30-10am) at 13,500L pp including freshly squeezed o.j. is not obligatory & is served in the room. Visa, MC, AX. English spoken (Bruce or Greta), direct-dial phone, TV upon request, antique 19th-century charming hotel w/wonderfully furnished comfortable small rms. & small bathrooms, #11, 12, 13 & 14 are the most expensive rms. w/large terraces, air-conditioning & minibars, double-paned windows, central heating, elevator. All the rooms have names so the Baronessa & Agnese are the best rooms but range from 240,000-270,000L for two. For lower-price rooms, ask for the Dei Belgioso or others like it which cost about 200,000L for two. The newly re-opened renovated hotel (1997) is not family-owned but is managed by Ms. Ora Paola, Bruce (husband) & Alex (son). Fresh flowers are put into each room every day. Take Malpensa airport bus to Piazza Cairoli. I know this hotel is a little above the price points I cover but many people wrote me about this place. I decided to include it because it was such a wonderful friendly hotel and they wanted very much to be in the book. You will enjoy spending your money on your room if you are looking for a true Italian experience. Metro: Carioli. From metro stop, exit onto Via Dante, walk down Via Dante, make a left onto San Tomaso, don’t look for an outside sign on the 2nd block—there isn’t any. Just look for the large green doors on the left. Walk up the stairs to the elevator.

My husband and I just came back from Italy in March. We, too, had a to catch a flight from Milan Malpensa and found an absolutely wonderful hotel just a mile (or less) from the airport. It's called the Hotel Villa Malpensa. It's Everything is decorated beautifully, large rooms, and a wonderful restaurant. It's above the price range you gave, but well worth the 320.000 lire (standard double w/ bath). They have a free shuttle to the airport to catch your flight. Check it out at: http://www.malpensa.it/villa.htm

I just posted this a little while ago to a similar question:
Author: Paule ([email protected])
Date: 4/27/2000, 12:53 pm ET

I stayed at the Gran Duca Di York and thought it was a very decent place. If you stay there, ask for the room with the outdoor terrace; it adds a lot of charm to the visit. The room was comfortable, with excellent air conditioning and modern bathroom. I think a lot of businessmen stayed there. I thought it was an excellent value when I stayed there last summer-- I believe it was L.240,000/night for a double. The hotel is on a small street very near the Duomo.
My daughter and I are booked into Antica Locanda dei Mercanti, per Margo Classe's recommendation. Web site is www.locanda.it, which now says you can take the Malpensa Express to Cadorna station, and then a short taxi ride (or walk) to the hotel. Will report when we return.
