Hi! Has anyone stayed at the Best Western Hotel Charlemagne in Lyon? I would appreciate any information...good or bad. Thank you

Hello, I've never stayed there but I just looked up the location on mappy.com, and I can tell you it's not in my favourite part of Lyon, located south of Perrache train station. To be honest, there's not much going on in that part of town, and you might be happier aiming for somewhere north of the station. A friend of mine who lived in this area said it was a bit dodgy.

Arlene We stayed at the Novotel Lyon La Part Dieu - attached to the 'other' train station. Brand new 2 - 3 yrs ago. Modern. Easy access to downtown.

I've booked Hotel la Residense for my stay the end of April. This was from advice here on the board. My twin room is for 65 euro. The website is www.hotel-la-residence.com

I agree with the above recommendations for La Résidence. I've stayed there before, as have my parents, and it was pleasant, good value and very well located (on a pedestrian shopping street, easy access to metro).

We stayed in Lyon last year at Libertel Carlton. It may be part of the accorhotels (www.mercure.com). We really liked it. It was around $100 and in a great location. we loved Lyon.

Another centrally located option on Presqu'Ile in Lyon is the Globe et Cecil Hotel. It's on a fairly quiet street just off the Place Bellecour and close to a Metro station. Rates for a double are about 125 Euro a night. However, the hotel participates in the Bon Weekend a Lyon program, so if your stay includes two weekend nights, one may be free. You need to mention this specific program and check on its availability when you reserve. The website for the hotel is: http://www.globeetcecilhotel.com

Thank you all for you replies. Hanl..exactly what does 'dodgy" mean? Is it dull? or shabby? So far the Charlemagne has offered us the best deal. I e-mailed the Clobe et Cecil, but haven't yet heard. La Residence is full. Ian..I haven't considered Part Dieu, because I thought it was "out of the way". Am I wrong? I am still open to suggestions. Today I will phone Mercure to check out the Carleton.

Oh dear, I just tried *twice* to post a reply and both times my message vanished into cyberspace. Third time lucky...? what I meant by "dodgy" is that the area might feel a bit unsafe - you may not feel comfortable walking around there after dark. As for Part-Dieu, I agree that you might find it slightly "out of the way" as regards the main tourist sights, but it's a decent area, with good metro/bus/tram access. Of the more central hotels, perhaps you could try the "Grand Hôtel des Terreaux", which is really well located near many shops, cafés and restaurants, and right by the beautiful Place des Terreaux. I agree with the Hotel le Residence. It's a great location and a great value. If you go by train, go all the way to Perrache. Sit on the right side of the train after leaving Part Deux and look out the window. You'll have an amazing view just as you cross the first river.

I have stayed at Hotel des Artistes few times. It is excellent located at the centre of town,within walking distance to all the attractions, and several good restaurants within 5 minutes walk (one just couple doors away). The rooms were nice and clean,but nothing fancy.

Greetings, We are staying at the Bleu Marine, which is supposedly on a quiet street near Old Lyon. Three stars, health club, parking (fee) and we got a deal including breakfast for well under 100 euros. Will report back--don't go until May but it sounds quite nice--we used Expedia. Hi! So now we have narrowed it down. At the Best Western, we could have a Queen with sitting room, coffee maker, no breakfast for 86 E, or we could have a standard room with breakfast at either the Beaux Arts or Carlton for 97 Euros. HELP!!!!! Any comments? Tuni, how was the room at the Carlton? Thanks again
