Hotel in London

I would be grateful for recommendations for a quiet, clean, moderately priced (less than USD 250 per night)hotel or flat/apartment handy for central London from mid February to mid March.

Have done some research on this forum and Trip Advisor but would be grateful for more personal imput. Thankyou!

Jessiepenn.

Keep in mind that 250USD is only 140GBP, when you're looking at hotel websites.

Thanks sandi. Are you saying that 140 pounds is not enough to get anywhere decent?

Best rates for london hotels you can get through priceline. The difference from regular rates is HUGE. If you can bid for a 4* hotel in Marble Arch, for instance, you´ll be able to get a hotel for less than 100 USD.

For a whole month, I would definitely look at getting an apartment. I did a quick google and came up with http://www.nyhabitat.co.uk/london-price.html which shows lots of places, easily in your price range. Pick a couple you like and then come back and ask about them specifically.

I agree that an apartment might be a better choice for such a long stay, but if you’d prefer a hotel, you might want to consider the Montague on the Gardens (in Bloomsbury, near the British Museum). I stayed there last year, and liked it well enough that I would consider staying there again on my next trip to London. (I’m one of the people who reviewed it on Tripadvisor, where it’s currently rated #33 among London hotels.)

I just went to the hotels’ website (www.redcarnationhotels.com – it’s part of the Red Carnation Hotels chain), entered some random dates from mid-February to mid-March, and got an average daily rate of ₤130 for a superior double room, which works out to about $230. The rates change from day to day, depending on the day of the week, so you might get a slightly different average rate depending on your specific dates, but it should be somewhere in that neighborhood.

Thank you all so much.

I grew up in the Uk and was a student for a year in London from '59-60. We moved to Pennsylvania 40 years ago so I hardly recognize 'the old country' when I go back. It was really nice of you to take the time to reply. I will certainly follow up on your leads.

How many of you are travelling?

A flat will be much less expensive than a hotel for a month's stay. Plus you will have a washer/dryer which really cuts down on how much you need to pack. PLUS you will have a lot more space and a full kitchen or at least a kitchenette.

For 1 or 2 nice studios can easily be found in the $100 - $175 range. And a 1-bedroom sleeping up to 4 (w/ a sofa sleeper) are all over from less than $170 up to about $200 per night.

And many will discount for stays of more than a week.

Try the Reubens at the Palace. It is very nice and moderately priced for central London.

DAVEFW - WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?

A lot of people swear by priceline as the way to go but I would limit my selection, if you can, to four stars or more as London hotels are generally not on par with the U.S. standards.

Also, check the hotels' websites for specials.

I can recommend The Academy Town House in Bloomsbury. The last time I checked their website, they had specials for between 99 GBP per night (VAT not included) and 150 GBP (VAT included). If they don't list any specials, inquire via email. The rooms are definitely on the small side, and there is no elevator, but the bathrooms are nicely appointed with Molton Brown toiletries (the last time I was there), really comfy beds with nice linens, and complimentary bottled water (nice touch). The hotel has a country house-feel. Only a few blocks from the British museum and Covent Garden.

The website:
www.theetoncollection.com

Also remember that most hotel rates don't include the VAT, which will significantly increase the rate.

I would not stay at the Pembridge Palace Hotel. I was there in Sept. and shared a room with a friend. Our beds we truly twin size and we couldn't stand up at the same time.

After leaving London, we stayed at a B & B in Killarney. Our hostess told us her son was in London days before and his room was so small that he could stretch out his arms and touch the opposite wall. Turns out he was also at the Pembridge Palace.

Breakfast was ok, and the room was clean.

Jessie, I bid $120. for a four star in Mayfair on Priceline and received an excellent room with bath at the Waldorf Hilton on Aldwych Lane. The location was perfect, the room was great, lots of nice amenities. I actually paid more than most of the posters here, but I encourage you to check out this option. I am convinced it was the best option for this single traveler.
