Hotel in Assisi
 

Planning to stay with my wife in Assisi for just 1 evening on the way to Florence.
Can you recommend a good hotel that would be in a central location within walking of most major points of interest, etc... Thanks. We are celebrating our 25 year wedding anniversary and it is our first time to Italy.

We stayed at the Hotel Umbra and liked it a lot. It was centrally located, but had a lovely view of the countryside.

Stayed at the Subasio with a tour. We did not have a good room. Be sure if you stay there get one of their better rooms. Get one with a view over the countryside not one on the street. It is an excellent location.

I've also stayed at the Hotel Umbra a few times and would highly recommend it.

You can request a room with a wonderful view of the countryside, and its location is fantastic -- right on the main square. Everything is an easy walking distance (well, relatively easy, given the steep slopes on which Assisi is built!)

We stayed at Il Palazzo in December. It's a pretty traditional little hotel--not sure if that's what you're looking for but we liked it. I would try to get a superior room if possible (they were booked for our stay so we were in standards which were fine for us).

Another vote for Hotel Umbra. We had a nice corner room with lots of windows and there is a rooftop terrace. Also has elevator.

We stayed at the Subasio and had a wonderful room. It was the end room on the corridor and had a big balcony to sit out on and look at the gorgeous scenery.

I've stayed at the Subasio as well, and our room was huge with a small balcony looking out over the valley. This was in 2003 and lately I've seen a lot of bad reviews, but the location is wonderful

I highly recommend La Pallotta (hotel and restaurant - be sure to get a reservation!) http://www.pallottaassisi.it/. They have a nice breakfast and an afternoon coffee and it is very affordable and just off the main square so very central for exploring. We have also stayed at the Hotel Belvedere nice views near Santa Chiara and San Rufino a decent budget option.

We were in Florence last October. We went by train to Assisi and it took the better part of a day. Think we went second class. If you are going by train, you may want to check the train schedule for first class rather than second class from Assisi to Florence to find out if it is a faster train.

It was not a nice train and we did not enjoy the ride except for the scenery.

Assisi is very, very hilly. You need to be able to walk up hills. It was so steep that at times I felt like I would fall over backwards.

But it was worth it to see everything there. We did stay at Hotel Berti which is not expensive. We hired a taxi from the train station right to the hotel. 10 Euro From Hotel Berti you are close to St Francis. It is up hill but not too bad.
