Hotel in Ancona

Does anyone have a recommendation for a hotel in Ancona? I will be staying there one night before picking up a rental car at the airport. Would it be worth staying near the airport or in the city?

The airport is in Falconara, about 12km up the coast north of Ancona proper. We took a taxi from that airport to the Hotel Jolly in Ancona & it was a short inexpensive ride...basically a straight shot south along the coast. Buses are also available.

I'm sure you could find a hotel right in Falconara, but given the short distances, if you want to do some sightseeing in Ancona while in the area, it would be easy to stay in Ancona & do some wandering, and then get back to the airport the next day. Really depends on your interests - the logistics allow for both very easily.

The Jolly Miramare is situated on a bluff overlooking the very active Ancona port, and is within walking distance of some sites you could take in if you are interested in venturing out a bit on this one overnight. Room style is Marriott & modern, not quaint. View out the front windows of the hotel includes the ancient Porta Pia, and to the left, surrounded by water is the old pentagonal Ex-Lazzaretto, where are historic & art exhibitions are held. Also, in the open center of that building in summer, there are live concerts and film showings. About a 3 minute walk from the Jolly.

To the right of that hotel is the rest of the oldest part of the city. You can walk within 10 minutes to the medieval Piazza del Papa (Plebiscito). Nice trattoria, La Moretta, is located there. And, your hotel can give you a brochure outlining a walking tour of the old city and you can do as much or as little as you want. I mention this only as an alternative to staying in Falconara. [The more modern city sprawl portion of Ancona (population is about 100,000) goes more inland than the areas I've mentioned and toward the south.]

You didn't mention budget. The Jolly is a more upscale moderate, not budget, hotel, as is the Palace (more old-style traditional decor) which is near the Piazza del Papa. There are budget hotels in Piazza Rosselli, where the train station is located, about 2km north of the Jolly Hotel toward Falconara. I haven't stayed at any there, but the Fortuna looked ok.

Hope this helps.

Oops! A "short" taxi ride leaves too much to the imagination, doesn't it? Sorry. It took about 10-15 minutes, and while I don't recall the exact fare, it did not seem expensive to us for the 12km ride and the cab driver was surprised when we gave him a tip! My best recollection is that it was probably in the $25ish range, but that really is a guess. If you go to the ryanair site, there is a section on transporation to/from the Ancona/Falconara airport which may include this kind of info.

Back to hotels, we liked the Jolly and would stay there again. Look for special offers in price. But, the Palace (next to the Teatro delle Muse) is a very nice hotel, as well, and has a top floor bar with a nice view of the city port area. Both would be convenient in terms of location for you. The Palace is generally a little higher in price, and a little farther from the direct toad to Falconara. As I mentioned before, budget hotels seem clustered near the train station & the Fortuna looks ok. I've seen others also mention the Italia. But I have no first hand knowledge of either.

I am familiar with the train station in Ancona. The hotels across the street (best of which is the Fortuna) would be OK for a late night arrival (with an early morning departure). Otherwise, the train station area is extremely dull and uninspiring, and I would recommend choosing a better part of town. I think the Jolly or the Palace are much better bets, though also more expensive.

Thank you Eliztrav and GAC for your replies. Very useful information. I like the idea of seeing a bit of Ancona before we head south in the Marche.

Have a great trip!

In Ancona, I'd recommend taking a taxi up to the Duomo and walking back down into town. It is up hill going to the Duomo and downhill all the way back to town <G> Many of the stops on the walking tour can be found on this walk. And, way below the Duomo at the port are the Roman arches. They were "in restauro" when I was there, so draped and scaffolded. We didn't get close to them so I can't tell you how far a walk it is, but looks to be well worth the effort to get up close now.

What I referred to as the Ex-Lazzaretto is also referred to as the Mole Vanvitelli....

Here's a site that may help you decide where to wander...there's a little film here, too.
