Hotel in Amsterdam - airport area or downtown?
Hello,
I will be arriving in Amsterdam on July 11, by car. The car will be returned to the airport in the early afternoon, and we have our flight back to the US on July 13 at 7am.
Do you think I should stay at the airport or in downtown?

If you only had one night in Amsterdam before flying home then I would recommend the airport. But since you have 2 nights there, I would stay in town. We did a similar trip in 1992 and we also stayed in town. The only bad thing is the train to the airport might not be running early enough to get you there by 5am, so you will need a taxi.

Choose for an airport hotel, and bring back the car that day. (Saves 1 or 2 day of rental).
From the airport many trains run into the city and airporthotels have shuttles to bring you from/to the airport.
Saves a lot of stress on the departing day!

If you do decide to stay at an airport hotel, and you feel you can afford it, you might cosider either the Sheraton or the Hilton. You can literally walk to the terminal from those.
Or the Mercure which is located within the terminal itself.

I would never stay near the airport in Amsterdam; you have 2 nights. The airport is less than half an hour from the center of Amsterdam. You will get so much more out of staying in Amsterdam. Drop the car off, take the train to town. Then on the 13th take a taxi to the airport; at that time of the morning there will be no trafic.

I would do exactly as Tulips outlines above. The possible convenience gained on the departure morning, would not be worth the trade-off for missing out on enjoying the city for the rest of the two days you have.
