thegrand.nl. the BEST 5 star in amsterdam. beds to die for, a great spa with steam and sauna that NOBODY goes to. excellent buffet breakfast at the albert roux restaurant. we stayed at the HOTEL L' EUROPE on our first trip, great bar, look up GERT, dutch for jeff, but the rooms just so so. the AMSTEL is another, but rather stuffy. we like the grand because of the location, the kick back vibes of the place. we would go no where else, period. be sure to look up the rooms on the internet, then CALL to neg. the price and your needs. the junior suites and one bedroom suites are online for $690 euro, we got it for $400 euro just this month. get a canal view in the back, it's the best. email if i can help. rich

The Swissotel is a 4 star I believe, but IMO the best value for money in Amsterdam. Located at Dam Square right in the center of town. Modern, well kept and remodeled rooms, the best and most friendly staff. More of a business hotel than the luxury "Grand". Contact them directly for best rates.

Nice but low key (or at least it used to be) Check out the Pulitzer.

I can easily concur that the Hotel de L' Europe was great. I would stay there again without hesitation. Location is great. Try to get a room overlooking the canal. You can check it out on www.lhw.com . This is the site for the Leading Hotels of the World

The l'Europe is excellent, but I'll agree with the Grand (now run by Sofitel). The location is as central as you can get (2 blocks from Dam Square), and the rooms and facilities are wonderful. I particularly like the restaurant (Cafe Roux) and the courtyard/garden in the center of the hotel, and the bar is a lovely spot for a drink or informal lunch.

If you hunt around, you can often get some decent rates at the Grand, under 250 euro.
