Hotel in Amalfi

Hello - I have received lots of great info on my other more general post. I was originally leaning towards staying in Praiano - sounds like Le Sirene meets my criteria for a hotel there - but from the other info I am also now considering Amalfi. This would be for a trip in April / possibly May. I need a room for 2 people, prefer a sea view, and woud like to keep the cost at or below 100 euros per night for both of us. Not sure if this is possible in Amalfi. If it isn't we will most likely stay in Praiano.
Also, the best airfare I can find is for the end of March. It would cost several hundred dollars more to go late April. I'm concerned about weather in March. I know it's a gamble in Spring in general but is March even worth considering?
Thanks!

Google for Onda Verde, a sea view little place just below Priano. The sita bus stops at the door and its halfway between Amalfi and Positano.

You might take a look at these two hotels, which receive very good reports:

Looks like you would need a car to stay at Il Nido; not so for Residence del Duca?

ekscrunchy Dec 30th, 2010 11:35 AM

The reviews of Il Nido mention that it was an easy walk of about 1km to the town. Looks that way on the map, but people have to be aware that that means walking part of the way on the main road...I had no problem with that but others might...

Thanks for the info. Has anybody actually stayed at these hotels? We will NOT have a car, so how convenient for the SITA busses for Il Nido and Residence del Duca? Also should mention that we prefer a small hotel, in case anybody has any other suggestions. All 3 look like great options though.

Residenza del Duca is IN the town of Amalfi so there is no need for a bus. I have not stayed there but for a long while it was the #1 choice on TripAdvisor and the reviews are excellent, and apparently genuine..

We stayed at Onda Verde 8 or 10 years ago. The only thing you see from the road is the top of the elevator housing and covered parking for a half dozen cars. The elevator goes down into the cliff and you exit in the lobby. I believe that there are about six or eight rooms and all with sea views.

Looks to me that the Residence del Duca is the preferred property for enjoying the night life in central (as opposed to outlying) Amalfi, whether or not you have a car. Il Nido may indeed have much better sea views, but I don't fancy a walk of 800 meters at night along the Strada Statale to get back to the hotel after dinner! On the other hand, Il Nido might be perfect as a romantic (???) "nest" for the night!

gillybrit Dec 31st, 2010 09:09 AM

Thanks folks - no "romantic nest" needed !! the trip is for me and my mum! As far as convenience for busses - I was also thinking about getting there and day trips once we are there. I agree - I don't fancy walking back to Il Nido at night, so I think I'm ruling that one out. How are the view from Residence del Duca - which, btw, looks like it's likely to be at the high end of our budget. Not really looking for nightlife anyway - just a nice meal in a casual place with a couple of glasses of wine....

Another place right in the town of Amalfi; some rooms appear to have views and the reviews are very good:

I've stayed at the Lidomare and can recommend it. However, a double room will cost more than 100E per night.

Thanks..with the high cost of flights, budget is important. Will we get more bang for our buck in praiano.
