Hotel help needed for Amsterdam
 

I will be in Amsterdam in May with my best friend. I get more confused about hotels the more I look. I would like something clean and conveniently located in a safe area as we like to walk a lot.Would like to spend around $150 per night, but could go higher if the hotel is worth it. We will move on to Brugges for two nights if you have any recommendations there as well. Thanks very much. I value the information posted on this sight.

I stayed at Hotel Kap which was OK in that price range with a nice breakfast included. But there are many other choices.

The one thing I will share is I strongly preferred staying out in the canal rings, near the Leidseplein or Vondelpark. It was my first trip and I was so glad I wasn't in the most central part of the city near the train station, the Dam, and RLD (which was much rougher feeling to me, I was traveling solo).

We've stayed in the Hotel Rho right off Dam Square twice. It is a basic hotel but we loved the location and the breakfast is very good. The rooms are not large but they are clean and the bathroom was spotless.
In October there was a huge carnival in the square, which we were not aware of when booking, and it was very loud. Our room was on the outside and thus the noise was very bad til about midnight. If you contact them, ask about events in the square or be sure you book a room away from the outside. It is just off Dam Square, not actually on it.
We did like being centrally located, walked easily all over the city, never felt the least bit threatened or uncomfortable. Lots and lots of restaurants there, too. And some very good shopping in just a few blocks, too.

We stayed at Hotel Bryghia in Bruges twice. Its clean, comfortable, has character, a good location, quiet,etc. Literally around the corner from the main square but not with the hustle and bustle. If you are drving, they do have parking available with advanced notice for about $10usd/day which is pretty cheap. won't blow your socks off with luxury but we thought it was fine.

You can often get the Moevenpick using name your own price on Priceline for between $100 and $120 US.

Very nice modern hotel for the price. It's a bit out of
the way but since you like to walk shouldn't be a problem.

100-110€ is a pretty tall order in Amsterdam... Try finding some options in Eurocheapo.com, and cross-match them on Tripadvisor (and here).

We stayed at the Canal House in Amsterdam in 2006 however it is closed until spring 2009 - we liked it very much but it was pricey as are most hotels in Amsterdam (around 170 Euros per night).

In Brugges, we stayed at the Adornes Hotel which was very affordable (around 100 Euros per night) and enjoyed it also. It is rated very highly on tripadvisor.

I really enjoyed my stay at Seven Bridges. The room was unique; the breakfast substantial; the location was perfect. Be sure to eat at the Italian place on the corner.

We stayed at the Ramada Inn in Amsterdam adjacent to Vondelpark. Nice, quiet, not the standard Ramada Inn and not quite the quirky hotel rooms we've often had and enjoyed on our travels. however, for the $$, it was a good value with a tram stop across the street and well within walking distance of any attraction. It was our default as we were there over Queen's day and made the decision to attend very late in the game.

All of Amsterdam is a safe area.

I suggest you go googling for a B&B in Amsterdam for economy and comfort.

We have stayed at Eden Amsterdam otwice. It's right near Rembrandtplein, so a great location. Often great deals are available. Check www.edenhotelgroup.com (and good prices may be available on other Eden hotels too).

If you're interested in a B&B, we've stayed at Mae's just on the edge of Jordaan, twice and like the place and location. Also stayed at the Blue Moon near Liedseplein, which had nicer rooms but was a longer climb up the stairs (4rd floor - European 3rd). Slightly prefer location of Mae's.

Stayed last year at the Bryghia in Bruges but felt we had gotten a little better deal for the same money the year before getting one of their larger rooms at the Hotel Jacobs, which is probably 5 more min. walk past the Bryghia.

You might consider the Hotel Zandbergen. It's a B&B in a nice neighborhood on the tram route and walkable to Vondel Park. I stayed there my first trip to Amsterdam and it worked great for me. I have reservations there again in 2009.

It iss wwithin walking distance of the Van Gogh and Rij. museumes, Leidesplein, and Vondel Park.

Our room was good sized with a balconey overlooking the garden and Vondelpark, the breakfast was substantial and the staff extremely pleasant. There is Wifi in the rooms for a small charge. The canal boat tour is nearby and the transportation options are excellent.

If you are planning on visiting the Anne Frank House, I suggest you book and print your tickets online. The line for tickets is long!

Almost forgot..another vote for the Hotel Bryghia in Bruges. We walked just about everywhere from there and the breakfast was very good.

i've stayed at the port van cleve hotel just off dam square behind the royal palace. it's reasonably priced, has a bar and restaurant. my only problem as that my room wasn't AC'ed which can be a problem if the weather is too hot. but the location is excellent. it's rightin the center of a'dam and you can walk to it from the main train station.
