Nice- I'd highly recommend Le Palais de la Mediterranee. It's a beautiful, recently renovated art deco palace on the Promenade des Anglais, facing the sea. Great service, nice rooms, small pool, healthclub, and casino all on site. The hotel charges a fee ( as do most if not all of the hotels in Nice) to use a beach club just across the street. The location is wonderful- only about ten minutes if that from Old Nice.

Paris- We spent a week this July at Hotel D'Aubusson on rue Dauphine in the 6th. This is a small, family-run hotel with beautifully decorated rooms. We stayed in one of the apartments, which was huge even by Parisian standards, and had its own entrance. The hotel is in the heart of Paris, so that you can easily walk to many if not most of the major sights.

In Nice I stayed at The Palais de le Mediteranee. Great location, great rooms.

For Paris I'd recommend the Hôtel le Madison. It's just across the boulevard and a small tree-filled square from the church of St-Germain-des-Prés, and corner rooms facing the front are large and comfortable. Bathrooms are large and modern, and the rooms have quite a lot of storage space. The buffet breakfast is excellent, but for something lighter a Paul's Boulangerie is about 1-1/2 blocks away toward the Seine.

The Madison is our favorite hotel in Paris--the location and space just can't be beat.

About Nice...do you want something Provençal in feel or something contemporary (neutral colors, etc.)?

Underhill,

I'd prefer something provencal in feel.

In Avignon, my favorite hotel is Hotel d'Europe inside the old town walls. It's a 4 star hotel with 5 star service. Their basic rooms look very charming and their suites are really large and luxurious.

Then, in Nice go for a deluxe room with sea view at the La Pérouse. The location is great: about a 2-minute walk to Vieux Nice and right on the Promenade des Anglais below the château rock. Rooms are bright, with use of Provençal fabrics and furniture. There's a swimming pool, a small exercise room with a fabulous view, and a roof-top sun terrace. Staff are helpful; there's no road noise, as the hotel is built up in levels on the château rock.

Both Dufy and Matisse stayed at the hotel; you can see Dufy's room in a number of his paintings.
