Hotel for night before Frankfurt flight

My husband and I will be flying home from Frankfurt to NYC and our flight leaves at 1:15PM. We will be driving from the area of Rothenburg ob der Tauber stopping off at Wurzburg to visit the Residenz. My travel agent has recommended we stay that last night in Bad Homburg mentioning the Park Hotel, Comfort Hotel and Steigenberger Hotel. Does it make sense to stay in Bad Homburg or should we stay at a hotel near the airport? I don't want to stay in Frankfurt itself because we will have a car and I don't want to deal with driving into and out of the city and pay for parking which is always more expensive in a city.

How about a hotel along the Rhine in Mainz? Only a short drive the following day to FRA.

I second the idea of Mainz. Visit St. Stephen's Cathedral and see the Chagall windows! Take the train to the airport.

You could turn-in your car in Würzburg the night before and catch an ICE train directly to the airport that morning. They leave every 1/2 hour and take 1-1/2 hours. We have done that once and we have stayed in Mainz once. Either works very well.

We enjoy staying in Mainz the night before a flight as well, and have done so several times. Nice town, the cathedral is wonderful, and great pedestrian/shopping area with lots of restaurants. Usually at the end of a trip we're pretty tired and ready to come home, so we really don't do a bunch of touristing then. Mainz fits our bill very nicely.

Whether driving or taking the train, you'll have no problems getting to the airport.

Happy travels!

Another train option is Aschaffenburg. It's a nice city but not spectacular. The hotel Aschaffenburger Hof is a couple of blocks from the train station.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'll look into them.

Bad Homburg is very pretty, nestled into the Taunus Mountains. Beautiful parks, and there is even a casino there if you like that sort of thing. Nice pedestrian shopping area too.

A visit to the Saalburg, a reconstructed Roman fort would be at the top of my list while there, or a visit to Hessen Park a great Open Air museum.

There are also castles very near by, most notably in Kronberg, which also has a nice Alt Stadt. Great views from up there.
