Hotel for a very short night in Amsterdam?
Hi,
I've been looking at Amstedam hotel posts, but my question is pretty specific, so I wondered if anyone could help. I'm flying into Schiphol from Rome arriving at 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday, and leaving the following morning for the States on a 10:30 a.m. flight. I like staying at airports and my first plan was to get a room at that little Mercure hotel right inside the airport -- but they're full. My second plan was to go to the Airport Sheraton, so I could wander Schiphol in the evening, then get a good night's sleep and be sure to be there to check in around 8 a.m. But the Sheraton is sooo expensive (almost $300 U.S. on travelocity and expedia) that I thought maybe for that price I might get a hotel in the city. I won't be going out for nightlife, and alas don't have time for museums, but at least I'd have the experience of seeing a bit of the city through the window of an airport shuttle or taxi. :) I don't want the worst of both worlds -- a hotel on the freeway but not walking distance from the airport. I'm always a little concerned about some traffic jam in the morning keeping me from my flight, though. So -- anybody have a suggestion for an atmospheric pleasant safe hotel in an interesting part of the city that has an airport shuttle, or that with a taxi, could still fall in the $300 U.S. category or less? Many thanks! |

You really shouldn't have any problem making it to Schiphol from Amsterdam for a 10:30 flight. It's only about a 20 minute train trip, even planning around getting there we are talking 30 minutes. It's the time requirement of the check-in that is static... not the distance from the airport.
So, leaving your hotel and being on a train by 7:00 shouldn't pose that much of a problem. I'd much rather be in Amsterdam or Harlem than in either of the airport hotels. |
Of course don't know when you're traveling, but the Ibis at Schiphol is around €110 a night. We've stayed there a couple of times and have been very satisfied. Free and quick shuttle to the airport; if you want to run into the city for a meal you can shuttle to the hotel, drop bags, then shuttle back to the airport and catch the train - zip zip you're there.

Gardyloo, Dana, Ira, thank you very much.
So it looks like I can just take the train into town. Is the area around the train station a good place to stay? Anybody have a favorite hotel? |
To clarify: I wondered if anyone has a favorite hotel near the train station? :) Thanks.

I have stayed at the Sheridan at the airport for $100 on a bid on priceline, have you considered this option?

Susanna, good idea, I'll try that!
The more I surf, the more this looks more complicated than fun, involving trams from the train station and much schlepping late at night, when I could be sleeping or checking out Schiphol's art gallery. Thanks so much, everyone. Off to Priceline now. :) |
There are several hotels in walking distance from Amsterdam Centraal station. If you don't want to go further using a tram then use a taxi. It would cost around 10-12Euro to go to Leidseplein/Vondelpark area.

Around Schiphol airport there are various hotels with free shuttle to/from the airport.
Like Ibis Hotel, Mercure Hotel, Bastion Hotel, VanderValk Hotel etc. |
