Hotel duomo or Hotel Picchio in Orvieto
We are planning on staying in Orvieto for one night and need a convent place to stay. I'm thinking of renting a car in Rome and driving. It seems it would be better to stay right in the center of things since i don't want to spend more time getting into town.
I like the reviews on the Hotel Picchio but was wondering if I could find something a bit cheaper. Can anyone recommend a hotel or b & b in Orvieto? I'm looking at the Hotel Picchio or Hotel Duomo and see they both have good reviews. Just wanted to get the best price I could. thanks

I would go by train to Orvieto from Rome. It does take an hour or so but the funicular ride up to town from the rail station is a delightful way to arrive. The best meal of my most recent trip to Rome was at Trattoria La Palomba in Orvieto.

Orvieto is a small city. I assume the Hotel Duomo is near the duomo, so it should be convenient to everything. Hotel Piccio says it's near the funicular railway, so you could get up into town fairly easily from there.
I would also be inclined to take the train instead of driving. Where are you going after Orvieto?

thanks Darelene300.
One more thought for Bobthenavigator. We will be arriving at 6:30a in Rome but I hear the car rentals do not open until 8am. I guess it will probably take us a while to get our luggage anyway. Plus we will have a large luggage for each and think it would probably be better to use a car. There will just be the two of us, so I guess we will put one luggage in the back seat.

OK--makes sense !
I prefer the back roads to Orvieto to avoid the GRA. Take A-12 north near the airport and exit near Tarqinia toward Viterbo. Then, north on S-2 to S-71 into the west side of Orvieto. The view of the town is spectacular from the west. Drive smack up the hill toward the Duomo and jog right thru the Duomo square to find the lot behind the Duomo. The hotel is about 100 meters from there. Have fun !
