I think I'm back to being convinced, and I've written to the Chiusarelli.
I will want to spend as much of that day in Rome as possible, traveling to Siena in the evening, will spend the following day in Siena before moving on to Florence.
Any issues occur to you about taking say a 5 or 6pm bus from Rome Tiburtina and arriving in Siena in the evening?
I will of course confirm my late arrival with the Siena hotel.

Elaine: I don't see any problem with taking an evening bus to Siena. I think they leave Tiburtina station every 1.5-2 hours, just tell the taxi driver that you need the bus terminal so he can drop you off closer to it since Tiburtina is also a train station. Have a great trip!

Bus is the way to go. You can still take a tzxi from P. Gramsci to any hotel, but most are close enough to walk (depending on luggage, of course).
The bus is a "coach"--very comfortable, with AC.
You will not be sorry spending the night in Siena, maybe 2 or 3?
