Ha! Dukey. Funny. I wondered about the Belvedere, too. I think I've read trip advisor stories till I'm blue in the face. And the number one hotel rating that has never been mentioned here is the Hotel Centrale Bellagio. Ahh what to do. What to do. So far, the Metropole has availability. 310 euros for 2 nights. Not bad, right?

We will be in Varenna in a couple weeks and staying at Eremo Gaudio.

Not first class but the views are.

Go to tripadvisor.com and look at photos and see what you think and read the reviews.

I think you need an upper level room for the BEST views.

Another vote for the Metropole. It is a bargain and better situated than the Florence. But the Florence does have a great restaurant and beautiful terrace.

FYI, we were in Bellagio in early August and expected it to be overrun with tourists, but it was very quiet in the evening. With our room at the Metropole overlooking the lake and a romantic lakeside dinner just down the street at Hotel Florence, we were in heaven!

Thank you, everyone, for your input. We have booked at the Metropole in Bellagio. As I stated before, we are then moving on to Venice from there to stay at Locanda Orseolo. We start out in Torino, by the way. When we return, I will join the rest of you with a detailed trip report of this trip (my first to Italy) with our 9 month old baby boy, and I'll let you all know how I did on the plane 10 weeks pregnant, as well! Thanks again!
