Hotel Dilema in Nice

Can anyone suggest a specific hotel or two in Nice that is relatively close to the beach and promenade des anglais that is comfortable and clean with air conditioning? We can pay in the mid to upper mid range per night. I am so confused because it seems you guys are right in telling me it doesn't matter how many stars the hotel is assigned. Some of the reviews on the 4 star hotels are horrendous! We have been saving for 5 years for our second trip to Europe and I am nervous about picking the right hotel in Nice. Please help!

I think you need to clarify what do you mean by "mid to upper mid range". We just stayed one night in Nice at Le Grimaldi. Good location, couple of blocks from Promenade. It's a bit dated but nice enough, I believe standard rooms are 160 euros, breakfast is not included. We paid for an upgraded room and I don't think it was worth it.

We stayed at the Hotel Suisse in May and the a/c worked really well in our room, which was very small but had a fabulous view. When we went back to Nice in August we stayed at the Hotel Windsor and although we had a/c it was not as cool, but it was adequate. The Windsor room was large and airy and we liked the hotel overall, we liked the Suisse too, we just decided to try another place when we went back.

The Ibis, 359, promenade des Anglais 06200 - NICE, is on the water and close the casino. It lists for 97E but booked 30 days out or more, it is much cheaper.

You have to read the hotel reviews in terms of what matters to you.

If 1 or 2 people complain about awful service - but everyone else like the places - I assume they are PIAs who want everyone to kowtow to them for spending the night there and there really isn;t a problem. If someone complain they don;t like the wallpaper - do I care.
'
If someone complains about cleanliness or an awful neighborhood - that;s something else again.
'
Only you know how much strong AC or the size of the room matters to you. Important to some people = not at all to others.

We stayed at the Massena a couple of years ago. It's about a 5 minute walk to the beach and just off Place Massena.

I have stayed twice at the Sheraton Four Points Elysee. Excellent hotel, right on the Promenade des anglais. The only drawback is that its on the opposite end from the marche.

You may get more for your money by renting an apartment instead of a hotel room. Check out nicepebbles.com, home away holiday rentals and ownersdirect.com as a start. I've used these sites with success - had a lovely 3 bdrm unit on Victor Hugo Blvd in Nice this Feb. It was convenient to beach and town and had everything we could have wanted as a home base.
