Has anyone stayed at the Hotel de Lutece on the Ile St. Louis??

Please tell me what you thought of it.

My husband and I stayed there in June 2005 for three nights. My parents stayed there possibly twenty times every year (until 1999) for 4 nights.

We stayed there because of my parents history with the hotel. The location is completely and utterly charmingly inviting even though the tourist factor plays strongly. We had an "enormous" room and loved the way we were treated.

If you plan on being in Paris for more than 5 nights..RENT!
On our subsequent trips we have rented an apartment on Ile St. Louis for a week at a time..oh.. for us there is so much more enjoyment to be had having your own Parisian residence. Think about pan searing breast of duck, fig jam, steamed sweet sugar peas, roasted red potatoes, and a lovely bottle of wine...all so yummy and easy to clean up way after sitting by your own dinning room window gazing upon the city...hum? Then taking a walk for coffee and a pastry..Hum?

Oh, sorry if I went on, we loved the hotel and hope you will too.

Also stayed there and really liked it. They have sister hotels, I also stayed at their other Ile St Louis hotel. This was all a few years back.

Location wise: ++. I really like this area.

As stated, an apartment could work out to be cheaper on a longer stay. I don't plan on cooking when in Paris, but like idea of blending in with a neighborhood and bit more space, so a rental is in my plans.

Thank you both. I would rent also, but we'd only be there possibly three nights, then a week in the Dordogne, and maybe back again for three nights before we go home to New York.

And Curiousaboutit, I'm coming over to your rental apartment for dinner!! sounds superb.

Oh..the superb dining pleasures my husband and I have had while "living" in Paris will forever be a smiling conversation. Travel is for immersion of the senses and restaurants add greatly to the memory bank yet .. to have the Seine, Hôtel de Ville (City Hall), and beyond right in front of you while cooking and sipping a splendid wine makes Paris entirely more "yours."

We would enjoy your company for dinner, this year is will be served in Spain..come on over.

As a matter of fact, several of us Fororites came together for a long luncheon at the Relais des Cinq Chateau in June of 2009 and then went to each others gite for the rest of the day.. good things do come about from this forum.

I hope you can truly enjoy your stay in Paris in which ever hotel you stay; it is the walk about for which you will be there, not the hotel!

Smiles and fun

Curious: thanks for your kind words. I can tell you love to travel, and eat and drink good food as we do.
We have had lovely trips to Spain and Italy as well, and look forward to many more.'
I would love to do a GTG some time. I'm hoping perhaps this time in Paris, once I get organized!
(Never heard of the Relais de Cinq Chateaux, but will now look it up. Yes Fodor's is fabulous!)

taconic: have stayed at Lutece a goodly number of times over a long period. One time we stayed next door at the Deux Iles..same owners. We have gone off to other choices in the city, but we usually have returned to the Lutece for the next visit. Being able to hop back and forth between left bank and right bank so easily is a plus. So many restaurants and shops, Notre Dame connected by a tiny foot bridge between the two islands ...and some within a few doors down the rue. Speaking of between the two islands (Ile de Cite and Ile St. Louis) be sure to take a look at the deportees memorial down a flight of stairs on the left side of the footbridge facing ile de cite. Dramatic.

I stayed at the Lutece long ago. The Ile St-Louis is certainly charming and tourist-friendly, and most of all it has La Maison Berthillon. The Lutece, or any other hotel on the Ile, is not going to be a particularly great value in terms of room space/quality per $; the value comes in the location. The Ile is an especially good place to stay if you want to be sure of a quiet room -- all of the hotels are on an essentially dead-end street.

We have stayed at the Lutece. It was several years ago and we really enjoyed Ile St Louis (will be renting an apartment there in September)
Our stays over the last few years have been in apartments so our experience is not current, but would recommend the hotel.
