Hotel De L'Universite

Has anyone had any experience with this hotel? We are looking for a place to stay for 4 days in May for our first trip to Paris. This was recommended by a friend, by I find little information on other websites I have checked.

Frommers has a book called Hotels of Charm and Character In Paris-the L'Universitie is in it..this is what they say-This is an excellent hotel which owes its long established reputation to an attentive management committed to creating the atmosphere and charm of a family house rather than a hotel. The original vaulted ceilings ,their oak supporting pillars, and the staircase and fireplaces have all been preserved.A subtle ochre color scheme has been chosen for the damask and velvet upholstery on the chairs and sofas in the sitting areas. The comfortable bedrooms are decorated with antique furniture and curios.
27 rooms with a/c -bath/shower- wc- telephone- tv- safe. credit cards,no dogs.bar. Hope this is a help..send for a brochure..22 rue de l'Universite
75007 Paris
Candice

I have stayed at this hotel a half a dozen times and I personally am very happy there. If this is your first time to Paris, I am not sure what you think a hotel in Paris should be. This is a "hotel of charm" meaning that it is not luxurious, the paint is chipped in places, there is no room service, but it is filled filled filled with charm. The rooms are charming, but by no means luxurious. As far as location, I think it is perfect, especially if you are interested in shopping. Make sure to ask for a room facing the courtyard, although the street that it is on is relatively quiet. The front desk is very helpful and you feel like you are living in the neighborhood rather than staying in a hotel. If you like that kind of feeling, then this hotel will work very well for you. If you like more upscale and marble baths, this is not for you.

I stayed there several years ago and found it to be a very pleasant hotel. Our room was spacious (for a hotel in Paris), the ceilings were very high and had tall windows. Our bathroom was modern and large as well. The location is quiet but an easy walk to lots of places.

Lynne: Using the book "Hotels of Charm and Character," we stayed at the Hotel de L'Universite on our first trip to Paris four years ago. For several reasons, we have not stayed there on subsequent visits (about seven over the past few years).

There is nothing wrong with it. It is a quite charming quiet neighborhood, the rooms are typical of a hotel of this class (our room was a bit worn, very tiny with a modern but small bathroom), and hotel staff is quite kind. However, we feel there are far better locations for your visit. It is sort of in a betwixt and between locale. If you are interested in shopping for antiques, it's great. We are not shoppers.

On my next visit, I looked for a hotel closer to a Metro stop, especially one that would be an easy connect to some very convenient Metro lines. We found that staying closer to Ile de la Cite worked better for us, and we have stayed in three different hotels around there: the Colbert, Hotel le Regent and Hotel du Bac. Each has its advantages.

More recently, because of price concerns for others in our travel party, we stayed at the Hotel Aramis across from the St. Placide Metro station in the lower St. Germain/Montparnasse area. Even though this area was not a pretty and quiet nice neighborhood, upon reflection, we still thought the immediate access to the Metro made this hotel a much better travel value for us than staying at the Hotel de L'Universite.

Where else to go? If I had my druthers for location, I'd choose Ile de St. Louis in an instant, but no matter what, I think that with only four days for your stay, you want to be some place that allows you to make the most of your limited time.
