Hotel de la Porte Doree or Langlois
Hi -
My husband & I are planning our first trip to Paris in December. I've exhausted myself looking through guidebooks, TripAdvisor, Fodors, Frommers, etc. trying to select hotels in the $70-90 range (60-75 euro). I've come across two that look great & that fit our price range: Hotel de la Porte Doree in the 12th and Hotel Langlois in th 9th (aka Hotel des Croises). However, neither of these are in the center of Paris. On the other hand, my husband & I are quick Metro learners (we quickly mastered the Milan Metro) & comfortable using buses & trains. Anyone stay at either of these hotels & have any comments on the quality and location (ease of sightseeing & surrounding neighborhood).? The Hotel Chopin in the 9th also looks great. Thanks!

I was looking at the Langlois myself recently, it is indeed hard to find info on it. National Geographic magazine praised it in 2001 and mentioned that #23 has a chimney and #25 beautiful woodwork; rooms in the rear are quieter. Choice of tub or shower, bathrooms recently renovated. Rooms have minibars.
I decided not to stay there because it's a little too far north for my preferences, I decided to pay a bit more for a location that I prefer.

About the Langlois, I went to their website... Lovely! Tripadvisor likes them, as well.
I haven't stayed there but I would!
I want to stay in each of the arrondisments by the time I'm through with Paris (yeah...right)...because my real education will be the whole kith-n'kaboodle.
If you're metro savvy...Perfect! More money for great meals!

The Langlois is the hotel used in "The Truth About Charlie", the second rate remake of "Charade". We made reservations there because of the reviews on tripadvisor. It is only 500 feet from the Metro and close enough to Galleries Lafayette to walk.
We cancelled only because of a change in plans and the dates we needed were not available.

It isn't just distance, the Hotel Langlois is near the train station and those locations usually aren't that great. However, it is an acceptable area and not that far out at all. I would far prefer the location of the Langlois than the Doree for convenience--the Doree is practically on the peripherique and on the far edges of Paris. I don't know that neighborhood, but I think it's perfectly acceptable and a normal middle-class Parisian neighborhood.
Some people might prefer the location of the Doree as being near the Bois de Vincennes and park, etc. I would far prefer the Langlois because it is so much more central.

I live in the neighborhood near the Hotel de La Porte Doree. The neighborhood is a nice attractive clean 19th century residential neighborhood. Ther are very few tourists here. It is fairly quiet and the BLVD Daumensnil is a wide attractive blvd with shade trees. The hotel is right next to the Porte Doree metro station which gives you access to one metro line.
There is a bus line that starts not far away from the hotel that will take you to the center around the Cluny and even on to the Eiffel tower. It takes about 20 - 30 mins on the bus to get to the Cluny depending on traffic. If you walk up the blvd Daumensil to Place Felix Eboue you will have access to two metro lines and 3 bus lines. Its about a 8 minute walk. There is a Monoprix in that direction as well about 5 mins away from the hotel.....
There are a few restaurants in the immediate area including the Bistrot de La Porte Doree which is one of my favorite in the area. Its around 30 to 35 euros (cant remember) fixed price including house cocktail, 3 courses, wine and coffee. There is also a McDonalds and a Quick if you are wanting something fast. Let me know if you have any other questions about the neighborhood. Would be happy to assist.

I stayed at the Porte Doree last summer because I wanted to meet the owner who is from my hometown. Turns out we never met her. If you do a search on Port Doree you can see my comments from when I came back. Basically it is a lovely hotel far away from everything. It is 8 stops from places you would want to go downtown but at least you don't have to change lines. We liked it fine. The area around it has everything including a laundry but no internet access. I would recommend it as long as you know you will have a long ride to anywhere.

The hotel is absolutely charming and the service could not be faulted. Our room was a good size, very nicely decorated, and had french doors which opened to a view of a typical suburban street. The street was very noisy, however. But the double paned windows in our room allowed us to sleep restfully. This may be a problem on very hot nights when you want keep the windows open. The staff was very helpful in planning our day and even held our luggage while we took our overnight trip. It may not be the choice for you if you return to your hotel several times a day, though, because it does take about 20 to 30 minutes one way if you have to transfer trains, which we almost always had to do."

Lots of room for a Paris hotel, with great antiques. We just hopped on the metro that was just out the door a few steps away to get anywhere we wanted to go, so that wasn't a problem for us."

I would like to talk more about the area around Hotel de la Porte Doree. Their prices are by far the best & I'm leaning toward them, but am still concerned about distance to the other sights in Paris. Can you tell me about travel times via Metro to central sites? Also, if we just wanted to hang out around our hotel, is the area relatively bustling with dining & drink options? If possible, you can e-mail me at: [email protected]

You can use the itinerary on www.ratp.fr and get the travel times between metro stops.
Porte Doree - Bastille was 10 minutes and to Concorde was 24 minutes.
We stay in the 14th (sometimes 17th) and don't mind a ride of 10-20 minutes because once we leave hotel for the day, we rarely return until late afternoon. We aren't big shoppers so don't have bags to take back, and we aren't nappers. It depends on your habits as to whether a bit of a metro ride is worth the room savings. I find another benefit is that it is easier to find a quiet hotel if it is <i>not</i> in the thick of things.
There is a comment on tripadvisor that mentions a)big park (Vincennes) and b)restaurants, cafes, etc in the vicinity.
(There is also a negative post but I believe they are referring to the Hotel Doree in the 18th, since it is their website photos that were mentioned).
