Hotel de la Place des Vosges??

Contrary to most people's opinion on this board, I will give my two cents worth. We stayed here for several days in June of 2000. I loved the location. The desk people were friendly and helpful. But I have to say unless they did some sprucing up, I would pass on this hotel again. For the price it was in need of a lot of TLC. The carpets were thin, the wallpaper was shabby. The drapes in our room needed replacing. The bathroom was old fashioned, but clean. I just think since returning to Paris, that the city has a lot of hotels to offer that give better value. Also, the breakfast was no bargain. Sorry. I wouldn't be afraid to stay here again, but I would pick somewhere else first. At the time it was 690 FF or so for a double.

Hi,

I stayed there two and a half years ago, and will be staying there again in April. It's a modest place, but I thought the location incomparable. I had thought about staying someplace else, actually, but I so loved being right off the Place des Vosges, that was worth it to me. And I too found the desk people very pleasant and helpful, rooms clean (but small). I think it depends on your expectations and budget. Sherry, do you have a better option in the same area?

Hi Andi. The next time we stayed in the 6th. So that is the only time we were staying in the Marais. But, for example, in the sixth we paid about 60 or 70 more francs and the rooms was very small, but much much nicer. There were a couple of hotels I checked out at the time that I think were booked. One was the Hotel de la Bretonnerie and the the Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais. But understand that I did not stay at these places. But personally, I would check out them first before I would book again at the Vosges. I do not mind small and I do not mind plain. I just thought it was getting a tad run down.

Sherry,

Thanks so much for your recommendations. I have heard about the Caron de Beaumarchais and the Bretonnerie on this board a lot, so I emailed both and guess what- they're available! I decided to splurge a bit and go for the Caron de Beaumarchais, as it looks a bit nicer than the other, and MUCH nicer than the Place des Vosges for a mere 8 euros more a night. Carol, the Hotel de la Bretonnerie is less than the Place des Vosges, and I think the St. Paul le Marais may be as well. The advantage to the Place des Vosges (which I think I may miss a little) is that is literally footsteps to the Place des Vosges, which I loved traversing everytime I went out or came back.

Hi Andi. I would love to know how you like the other hotel. We really liked the Marais, but just were not really happy about this hotel. I like to get value for my money and for very little more, I feel you would do much better. AT the time that we booked, the others were not available. And 8 Euros is so very little extra. This area is pretty compact and you really will not be all that far from the Place des Vosges. If you have time, you may want to see the Canavalet Museum (forgive me if I spelled this wrong.) ANd walk up to where the BAstille used to be sit at one of the many cafes and have a drink watching the people.

Carol,

It may be that the price differential for a single vs. a double is more significant. I was quoted 120 euros for a double (which was way more than I paid for a single a couple of years ago). The hotel is perfectly fine, and I was quite happy there, so I wouldn't worry about it. And the location is superb. Also, they did a nice breakfast, although I now realize that one could probably do better eating out. Also, the desk staff was very nice and helpful. You probably won't spend a lot of time at the hotel anyway. Bon voyage.

Thanks for the tips everyone. The Bretonnerie will charge me the same for a single as a double. I will go with Place des Vosges, of Jeanne D'Arc.

Andi, enjoy the Caron! Seems realy lovely, and not too far from Place des Vosges. That's a draw for me too as well!
