Hotel Burg - Budapest

I have made reservations for the Hotel Burg in Budapest's Castle District for August. Any first hand experiences with this hotel? Looks nice. I realize that later in the evening, we may have to take a cab up to the district if the funicular and buses stop running up there. Can someone share experiences with the hotel or that area (restaurants, etc..)?? Thanks!!

Yes, we stayed there for 3 nights in March 2005. It was fine, nothing spectacular. We had a twin room with bathroom for about £100 a night (I think it was £ not $ but can't be sure. I know there's a big difference! We paid by credit card in $ I think.) The location is good, right by the Fishermens' Bastion on the big square. Some people thought the tour buses made it noisy but we didn't find that at all. Several nice coffee shops and bars just behind the Burg. The Hilton is just across the street if you want the restaurant there, and there are several nice places in the nearby streets. We went into Pest for dinner too. Breakfast was included in the price and was very good. The staff were very helpful. The place was clean. There was internet access for a small charge, ask at reception.
We walked everywhere. There is a footpath down the hill to the river and the Chain Bridge where you can cross over. Fantastic views. There is a funicular up to the top of the hill from the bridge and it was running every time we wanted it. We got buses/trams and trains everywhere, there is a helpful Tourist Info office right on the square and they sold us books of tickets which worked out very cheap.
Anything else, ask and I'll try to remember!

Hmm, just rechecked on Tripadvisor. It must've been $100. Sorry for the confusion. There are some good reviews there too if you have a look.

Thanks, Gertie. That was wonderful feedback.

Hi deena,
Just saw this post today. I stayed there with two friends four years ago. We loved it. Because it was quite new, and we were staying nine nights, they gave us a fabulous rate. As it turned out they even offered to give us one night free if we paid cash. We ended up paying $29/pp per night. It is not a posh hotel by any means, but very comfortable. Our room was huge and we had a fabulous view out of about 7 windows including one in the bathroom. We looked right out on Trinity Square, Fishermans Bastion, and Mathias Church. We really wanted to stay in Buda and at that time there were only three options, the Hilton, another place on the square that sounded much like a hostal and this. We were more than pleased. We always walk a lot on our trips but it was very cold when we were there, I think the end of March. they were very surprised that is was so cold then as they said it usually warms up by March 15. Because of this we took busses more than we might have. There was a small bus that stopped right at the hotel coming from the station and there was a stop diagonally across the square to head down. Took about 6 or 7 minutes. From there another bus took you anywhere in Pest. If we ever return to Budapest we would definitely stay there.
Hope this helps you. I'll be glad to answer any questions if I can.
Char

Oh Char...thanks so much for your input. It is very helpful. We are staying in August (after the races) and this hotel looked interesting. Thanks, again!!

I have never stayed there but have read very good reviews about the Hotel Burg and tried to book it twice in the past but it was booked on the dates that I wanted.

Hi Deena - we stayed there in April 03. It is a tour group hotel, which is not my normal type of place, but we were in Budapest without a room and remembered its fine location. As far as rooms go, unremarkable. Kind of like a Super 8/Motel 6 style to me, where every thing is bolted to the walls, but it was plenty big and it was clean. It just did not have any sort of special atmosphere. We drove in and had a bear of a time getting up to the hotel - couldn't find a break in the walls! If you are driving, make sure you get good directions!

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

do you want to stay in the Castle District instead of the Pest side? Buda side is dead after the castle and the museum close. after 6 pm, there's more to do in the Pest side.
