GSP-and if there's no space, perhaps he'll get to sleep in his car. Sorry, I couldn't resist that
quot;>. I know that many of us have a lot of travel experience, but may I remind you that just because you have had this experience off and on for 25 years, doesn't mean it will necessarily apply to him. Travel to Italy is way up this year, and hotel space is at a premium.
Personally, I'd pre-book the hotels.

And Kaminahoku, that's quite all right dear, I doubt whether you go to this area as frequently as I do, though.
If space was at such a premium, then there'd be virtually no availability showing for these Northern Italy hot spots for August-and I just looked on venere.com, that doesn't count the tourist office listings in the areas at issue-which are far more numerous.

GSP- You're absolutely right, I probably don't get to that area as much as you do...I have my own areas of expertise to visit. But, I will rely on your experience with that particular website and accept that there may be space in August for chriss_hk.
Please forgive me if I'm a little skeptical of travel websites such as those. Having worked in the travel business for eons, I've had to speak to too many clients who call up and say they want the $183.00 r/t ticket to wherever for Easter weekend, and it's now Good Friday. Or they "just" saw availability for a hotel, and why can't they get it?... When they whine , "but I SAW it on the internet..." it makes me wonder when they saw it, or if they did in fact just see it, who forgot to update the website?
We both want his experience to be as wonderful as possible...we just approach it from different angles.

So here's a funny story to lighten the atmosphere! On 14th August quite a few years ago my sister in law arrives to stay at our house in the mountains (Trento/Bolzano) and comes up in spots: diagnosis - German measels. I am about 9 months pregnant and don't want to get sick so we decide to leave for a tour of Alto Adige. We drive off and after an hour or so find a nice place with a room available but we decide to drive on....well.... at midnight after driving and driving and trying every single hotel, B&B, restaurant whatever for miles and miles we ended up exhausted on a mountain pass where the owners of a small full hotel took pity on us and gave us one of the waiters' rooms! Our Joseph and Mary look certainly helped, are either of you going to be heavily pregnant?

JandaO-huh? My dear, whose valuable vacation time are you talking about? Simply because you may not have traveled all that much, and therefore would not be comfortable knowing how to wing it in foreign countries, does not mean everyone else is in that same boat-what an odd remark!

With all rspect, gypsygirl, there are times when it is easy to wing it, and times when it will be stressful. I've traveled extensively over the years, sometimes "winged it" with success, sometimes not (really long lines at a tourist office; an unexpected festival that crowds even nearby towns) and try to figure out when it will be more effort and stress than it's worth. While I like new experiences, there are some times when I know it will be more diffiicult to find something spur-of-the-moment, or if I am picky about a location (e.g. the night before I get an early plane.) I prefer to leave serendipity to havnig the time to find a new restaurant, explore an additional cultural attraction of have more beach time, etc. If in my travels I find the perfect lodging (based on whatever criteria) that I should have waited for, it's something to look forward to next time, or make a recommendation to others.
Especially with the internet, it is so much easier to browse ahead of time, get questions answered, etc. While reservations can lock us into a schedule, we've usually been delighted with the choices we've made.
None of this is said with any harshness, but it is important to admit that there is a time and temperament for winging it.
