Hotel/B&B on Mont Ste. Michel?

Any recommendations for places to stay on Mont St. Michel? There will be 5 of us: me, DH, and 3 teenagers.

My husband and I stayed at Le Mouton Blanc, one of 3 hotels (I think) that you pass on your right as you walk up the main "street" after entering the town walls. We popped in there spontaneously to see how much it would cost. It was only $78, including tax, which was quite a bargain. We weren't in the hotel proper, but farther up the hill, on the left side. You entered through a stone archway and up some steps. Once inside, there were more steps up a spiraling staircase. It's one of the quaintest entries to a hotel I've ever experienced. I felt so romantic every time we left or entered our room! The room itself was tiny and nothing to brag about, but perfectly serviceable and clean. I'm sure they have bigger rooms to accomodate you, but for that price, you could probably rent 2 rooms if you had to. This was in October, so it was a bit off-season. We didn't eat in their restaurant so can't comment on it, but be very careful when you choose restaurants - we had the worst meal in all of our travels in Europe in a place there. It's quite a tourist trap along that main drag, so if you can do some research and find something people recommend, go for it. Of course, you didn't ask for restaurant advice. Sorry. I do recommend staying on the island overnight because most to the tourist hordes are day-trippers, and being there when it is calmer is a magical experience.

"Nothing to brag about, but perfectly serviceable."

As far as I can tell, this is right on as a description of ALL of the lodging possibilities on the Mont.

Thanks so much - it sounds like just what we are looking for. My husband and I were there just for part of a day 19 years ago and thought it was the most wonderful place, so we're planning to take our boys there next summer. Usually we don't go back to places just because there are so many new places we want to see, but the boys want to see the landing beaches and then we're so close to Mont St. Michel! Closer to time I'll get restaurant suggestions. I think we had a picnic before we got there and left before dinner.

We have stayed twice at the Auberge St. Pierre and LOVED it. I would go back there again in a heartbeat. It isn't fancy, but it's in a very old timbered building, and you are right there. I love seeing the workers coming first thing in the morning in the streets. :)

Belatedly - thanks. I'll check into it, too.

I hope you have not already booked Mouton Blanc as I have nothing good to say about it. We found this hotel in Rick Steves' Guidebook and went ahead and booked since our first choice hotel was fully booked. He described MB as quaint but my description differs--very seedy. Beds were lumpy, room overlooked noisy main street, bedlinens awful, and early am a pigeon flew into our room. Apparently the nest was just outside on the windowsill. In addition to the above, we were sure some items were taken from our bags--I will have to say we took bags in as the luggage was left in the trunk so as not to have heavy baggage to climb the steps. If you have no other choice of a place to stay then you can try MB--we were there in April 2003 and did have the experience of the high tides so I don't regret not staying on the Mont but a nice room would have been our preference.MB needs a total redo IMO.
