Hotel and Itinerary help in Lucerne
We are first time visitors to Switzerland and only have a 2 day stopover in Lucerne before heading to Karlsruhe, Germany. We are in our early 60's and still somewhat energetic, although not into much serious uphill hiking. We prefer to sightsee, taking in the beautiful scenery, stroll around the city, do some shopping, maybe do one museum, time permitting. We will arrive in early afternoon on October 3 and need to head out via train to Germany by mid-afternoon on October 5. Need recommendations for a conveniently located, mid-price hotel and suggestions for a very doable itinerary in Lucerne.

On arrival afternoon you could take a stroll up along the ramparts of the old city wall (Museggmauer) which is accessible from the street Löwengraben (just off the River Reuss wier) in the old Town (Altstadt). There are great views, a clock tower ( the Zytturm or "Time Tower" that chimes 1 minute before all other clocks in the city) as well as 8 other towers and it's free. Open until dusk until the end of October. You don't have to walk the whole length if you don't want, but it's hardly strenuous. Or you could save this for tomorrow and stroll the Chapel Bridge instead (take notice of the signs for which side to walk on so you don't hold up traffic), feed the swans and get your bearings.
The next day, if the weather is good, do a lake cruise - either to and from Luzern, or if you plan to go up a mountain you could cruise from Luzern to Alpnachstadt, take the cog rail up Mt Pilatus, spend a little time looking around, then come back down via the cable car to the suburb of Kriens and take the number 1 bus back to town (20mins). Then stroll the old town, wander up to the Lion Monument and Alpine Garden, have fondue (won't be cheap but will be good) at Zunfthaus Pfistern, Stadtkeller (although they have a folklore show which adds to the cost) or Fritschi, but avoid Fondue House at all costs.
There are quite a few museums in Luzern - Richard Wagner, Art, Historical, so you can take your pick. There are also two churches worth a quick visit for their style - the Jesuiten Kirche (Jesuit Church) and the Hofkirche (Main opr Abbey Church). Or just continue to wander and shop yourself sick on chocolate (the Merkur store in the Old Town does nothing but chocolate!).

If you have mobility problems, I would stay close to the Old Town. Des Alpes, mentioned above, would be a good hotel choice.
If you are very fit, I would stay somewhere on the lake. The Hotel Montana is my favourite hotel in Luzern. It is high on a hill with great views and is very quiet.
You do not have to climb the hill to get to it. Across the street from the Palace Hotel (the best hotel in Luzern) there is a funicular that will take you right into the hotel lobby.
I have been to Luzern many times and I would never stay anywhere other than a hotel along the lake. However, I am 42 and very fit.

Thanks everyone....have now booked the Des Alpes and begun to plan our time in Luzern. Appreciate your great tips, "Madam"... this should keep us busy; salivating thinking about that Swiss Chocolate!
