Hotel and Fishing in Nice
 

I will be picking up my 14 year old son from camp in Valbonne and plan on spending two nights in nearby Nice August 1. He loves to fish and stay in nice hotels and eat good food. I am having trouble figuring out where to stay/eat and how to go about arranging this fishing day trip. Any help appreciated. Also, any help in how to select messages for the city of Nice instead of the word "nice"?

Hi Appelrew, I had a similar problem when searching for Nice hotels--kept getting "nice" hotels instead from all over Europe (or all over France if I selected France from the toolbar).
I suggest you search under Vieux Nice --most of the threads dealing with Nice have Vieux Nice in there somewhere and you won't get any irrelevant posts about "nice" hotels, restaurants, etc.

By the way, Appelrew, if you haven't already seen it, rent the movie Maximum Risk with Jean-Claude Van Damme. More interesting than most of his movies and much of it is filmed in Nice, particularly Vieux Nice.

I'm going to Nice again in August. We always stay at the Westminster, which is about a 15 minute walk from Vieux Nice, and across the street from the sea. The hotel is a 4-star, though a little shabby around the edges (although recent renovations may have taken care of that problem). But for the location and size of the rooms, I don't think you can go wrong. Standard sea view rooms with a small balcony and chairs run about 225E a night.

If that's too expensive, you could look into:
Hotel Grimaldi
Hotel West End

To find out about fishing trips, you could check the local tourist office which is on Promenade des Anglais, about four blocks away from Hotel Westminster ( a left out of the hotel).

Just returned from a few nights at the Hotel West End. While the location was good and the lobby nice, we weren't thrilled with the room. Our first room had no hot water and the shower head did not work. (Also the air conditioning is only turned on it summer) They did move us right away though. It served its purpose, but no place I'd spend a lot of time. Also, they make it seem as though breakfast is included, but it's not!

I have a photo of the beach along the promenade des anglais that I took more than 10 years ago while taking a morning walk. On this photo, I see a couple of middle aged men fishing on the otherwise empty beach. This could have been in May and at about 7-8 am.

For doing text searches here try
Cote d azur (don't use apostrophe) or french riviera AND hotels. The only hotels that I recall are often mentioned in Nice that haven't been mentioned in this thread so far are La Perouse and the Negresco.

If you would consider staying somewhere other than Nice, Villefranche, Cap Ferrat & Beaulieu are all close by, on the water & not far from Nice airport & might have fishing and/or hotels to interest you.

The website provencebeyond.com might ahve some fishing info.

The recently renovated 3* Beau Rivage has a good location: about a block from Vieux Nice and one block over from the Promenade des Anglais and the beach. We've also seen people fishing along the part of the beach near to Cagnes-sur-Mer.
