Pat: You will need to by a ticket for the bus -- it is around .77 Euro (about the same in US$). Most tabacco shops sell tickets, or there will probably be a newstand/kiosk nearby. Ask at the hotel, they will be able to direct you. Remember, the bus stops only at stops if it has to unload/pickup riders =you won't be able to just count stops to know if you are where you need to be. So stay near the driver and ask him/her to let you know when you get to your destination. If you do go to Piazza Navona -- you will also be near the Sacred area of Largo Argentina, an ancient pre-Christian site the site where Julius Caesar was actually assinated. Have a wonderful time -- Rome is delightful.

Pat--there's actually a newstand right near the bus-stop. There's a sign at the bus-stop which tells you what stops the bus makes. Ask the hotel concierge the number of the bus which will take you closest to the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona. If he says there's one that stops at Piazza San Silvestro, take it. That's a main bus hub right in the middle of town--right around the corner from the Trevi fountain and a couple of blocks from the Spanish Steps.
