Hotel Advise
We have narrowed our hotel choices down to two: Hotel Madison and Relasi Saint Germain.Please give us your recommendations and experiences with these two hotels. We are down to the wire and need experienced advise. Thank you.

Everyone on this board knows you stay at Bonparte - give it a rest and let others have the opportunity to voice their opinions. Plus, the light bulb needs to be replaced-
I haven't stayed at either of these hotels and I am also interested in hearing other responses.

what a jerk (of course you are probably a "regular" who registered just so you could post a snarky message and not lose your "cred" )
Anyway, whitewoman, you will likely get more response if you re-post w/ a better title. "Hotel Advise" could be asking about any city in Europe.</u>

We splurged and stayed at the Madison for a one week trip two years ago. It was everything I expected, large rooms with a lot of storage, comfortable (by European standards) bed, modern bathroom, spotlessly clean, good breakfast buffet and friendly, mostly, staff.
That being said I wouldn't stay at the Madison again. It was exactly what I expected and was very nice but I have stayed at other places that were equally comfortable, if not so centrally located, for much less cost. I would prefer to spend less on the room and more on wine myself but that's just me. The Madison is lovely if you want to spend that much money and you can't go wrong with this great location.
I have never stayed at Relasi Saint Germain so maybe someone else can answer that one.
Next trip I will follow Ira's advise and stay at the Bonaparte. Go Ira.

I've been in the Madison (a few years ago we got bold and went to several popular hotels and asked to see rooms for future visits). We also have stayed at Relais St. Germain twice. There is no comparison in my book. The Relais St. Germain is more atmospheric, larger rooms, and more beautifully furnished than the Madison by a long shot. In addition if you stay there you can easily eat at the coveted restaurant attached -- Le Comptoir --which you can't get reservations to otherwise for 6 months in advance!

At the risk of sounding like an ultra pedantic snob brimming with academic pettiness and full of conceit and pathological control tendencies because I am a badge-wearing member of the language police, I do have one question:
How and why is it that native English speakers cannot distinguish between "advice", which is a noun, and "advise", which is a verb?
On the hotel question, I have long puzzled over how people could "narrow down" a hotel choice in Paris without ever having been there. I don't do that.
Taking advice from somebody I never saw in my life, and basing a decision on that advice, is nothing more than taking a stab in the dark. I can and will cite only one hotel in Paris with any authority: the Aiglon on Boulevard Raspail. Do I advise it? No. Did I like it? Yes.
Did I receive advice before going there? Yes. Do I think someone else should stay there? No, but I will tell you what I experienced, if asked.
So I may be a pedantic snob full of grammatical precision, but I am not so presumptive as to feel that my opinion is the world's most weighty and that everyone should follow my suggestions.

Mia culpa on the advice, advise controversy. That is one of those words that I consistently mess up when writing but certainly know the difference between the two when speaking or reading. I can only assume I got my point across in spite of the spelling error.
