Always great help here! So to the well again I go...

We'll be staying in Bellagio for 6 days and checking out Thursday morning so that we can make a Friday morning flight at Milan Linate airport easily. We want to tour Milan on Thursday afternoon and evening and arrange an easy shuttle for Friday AM.

Does anyone have a hotel recommendation that would make touring Milan Thursday afternoon easy, by Metro etc, and still an easy shuttle back to the airport Friday morning with traffic for a 11;00 flight?

I'm looking for a 2-3 star, clean but not necessarily fancy hotel.

I've stayed at Mini Hotel Aosta across the street from Milan Centrale. Jean's hotel is convenient to the Milan Cadorna station which has more frequent trains to the airport. Cadorna is a couple of subway stops from Centrale.

If you are flying out of Linate airport, you want to stay around the Central station, which has regular bus service to Linate starting at 5 am. The ride takes 30 minutes. (Cadorna station does NOT have trains to Linate airport. It has trains to Malpensa airport).

From the central station area it is quite easy to use the Metro to get the Duomo, or if you are feeling energetic, you can even walk. A taxi is not an outrageous expense either.

Milano is one of the few Italian cities where you need to be careful about going too low in price, because you can end up with shabby or dirty. Venere.com, Booking.com and Tripadvisor have copious and recent user reviews for hotels in the area of the Centrale station.

One of Milano's tastiest restaurants is near the central station: Osteria del Treno. But you need to make a reservation.

I landed on the Hotel Ariosto which seems walkable to the last supper and a short walk to the Metro and 10 minutes to the Duomo. Only 5 1/2 miles to the airport so no need for a 6:00 AM taxi either! Seems ok and at $150/nite it's in my comfort zone.

Just so you know, it is more like 10 miles from the location of your hotel to Linate, and you should leave a bit of extra cushion on travel time to allow for morning rush hour traffic. That doesn't mean you need to get up a 6am, but just that you should budget a minimum of 30 minutes door-to-door for the trip.

If you do a search of the Chowhound website's Italy message board, you will find a large number of recommendations for restaurants in that area. You can also look on the Milan section of the Spotted by Locals website.

PS: You need to book in advance to see the Last Supper, and tickets often sell out months ahead of time.

Thanks Zeppole! I'll get on the reservations, I think Rudy Maxa said the same thing so my wife was planning on it already.

We stayed at Hotel Berna, close to the train station and the metro and absolutely loved it. The reasonable cost of €3,00 for a 24 hour transit pass made getting around Milan fast, easy and inexpensive. Be sure to visit the magnificent Duomo. We did the rooftop walk (€8 to use the lift, €5 to use the stairs) and it was spectacular

We ate at Luini Famous Panzerotti, close to the Duomo, and can totally understand the “famous” part. These are the most delicious creations, like no other we have ever tasted, and very reasonably priced. We also ate at Ristorante & Pizzeria 2 located minutes from Hotel Berna which was recommended on a travel website. Spot on; excellent food and service at a reasonable price.

Seconding Hotel Berna though it sounds like you have another spot, and also Osteria del Treno, if you are near Milano Centrale. Reservations for sure! Have a great time.

annw- when I look for hotels in any city I look for, or at least hope for, a breakfast like the one provided at Hotel Berna. I've always ignored hotel breakfasts because I like to go to cafes for the people watching. But the breakfast at the Hotel Berna was one of the best parts of our stay and I looked forward to it every morning!
I wish I could have that experience again.

Antica Locanda Leonardo is very near "The Last Supper" and is a lovely three star hotel, quiet, wonderful breakfast.
