Hot Chocolate in Paris
I went to Angelina's years ago and enjoyed the experience, from the unbelievably decadent hot chocolate to the pretty surroundings. I'd like to take my son there, but we're in Paris on a weekend, and we won't want to wait in line for cocoa.
Are some hours better than others for avoiding a crowd at Angelina's? Where else would you go for that really special chocolat chaud? |
Early morning, IMHO, I think Angelina's is the best. It just does not taste the same at other places.

Les deux magot serves fab hot chocolate. You could combine that with sitting outside and enjoying the full cafe experience. I've not been to Angelina's so I can't compare the two.
|
Take your time - part of the fun is watching what other people get - especially the pattesserie. Sit and relax. It's not a race. :-)

Chocolat l'Africain from Angelina is the only way to go; hmm, avoid lunch time; the retail product they sell is not even close. Wait in line and look at the people and the decor.

Thanks, all -- sounds like another case where only the original will do!

Jean-Paul Hévin's "chocolate bar" in the 1st is also a great place for hot chocolate.

La Galerie at the Hotel Geroge V has the best hot chocolate in Paris. Go during tea service from 3pm to 6pm. La Galerie makes Angelina look like a truck stop.

So true, Sarastro! We like the hot chocolate at Jacques Genin as well.
|
I can't stomach Angelina's hot chocolate. I find it completely cloying, and the waitresses are beyond brusque.
|
there's gotta be some other good hot chocolate in Paris? I never had a hot chocolate in Paris I did not enjoy.

I think I'd prefer the chocolate to be brusque and the waitresses to be cloying. |
Le Café Martini (near place des Vosges) is another good place.

Add Un Dimanche a Paris to the list. They have "tea time" from 3pm to 6pm.

So what can Angelina's add to natural chocolate to make it so so good?
chocolate is chocolate and it can only be heated in certain ways - now decor and reputation and the power of suggestion can be strong but chocolate - good chocolate ain't that how to make - hot chocolate we're talking about |
(And having started this thread, I have to confess: we didn't go into Angelina. It was HEAVING with hopeful hot chocolate-drinkers. My son was very happy to skip the line for ... chocolate ice cream from Amorino. What can I say? I will note down all other suggestions for future trips.)

...L-O-V-E Amorino!

I was in Angelina's in 2012. It was an enchanting cup of hot chocolate. I was sitting next to a young student from Korea who told me it was her last day in Paris. She was blushing because she was ordering three huge pastries and a cup of hot chocolate. She explained that this was her farewell to Paris.
I don't have a sweet tooth but ice cream at Amorino at midnight for 4 nights in a row seemed to make me very happy! Loved this thread. |
Well if Angelina's is too jammed try one of these Time Out honored 'best places for hot chocolate in Paris!
