Hosteria Ayala Berganza - Segovia

Ok, so now that I've booked the Hosteria Ayala Berganza for two nights in Segovia, I've read a review in tripadvisor.com (it's the only review I've read on this hotel by someone who stayed there) which said that the area around the hotel is "somewhat sketchy." The Infanta Isabel & Los Linajes were booked for both nights. Have any Fodorites stayed at the Ayala Berganza or do you know about the area? It's on Calle Carretas near the San Millan church.

Hasn't anyone stayed at Hosteria Ayala Berganza in Segovia? If not, can anyone tell me about the location on Calle Carretas near the San Millan church. How far is it from the Plaza Mayor? I couldn't locate the area on a map of Segovia.

CFW, The Calle Carretas or Street of the Wagons used to be Segovia's working class neighborhood centuries ago(Moorish artisans and trades). See if you can locate Avenida de Fernandez Ladreda, Calle de Santo Domingo de Silos, and Plaza Doctor Gila. These three streets form a triangle. If you draw a line from Ladreda down to Silos thru the middle of that triangle, you just located Calle Carretas. Very close to the Aqueduct, it is within walking distance to Plaza Mayor, just follow Calle de Julian Bravo towards the Cathedral. I did loved San Millan Church, a breathtaking example of romanic architecture. I spent some days in Segovia by myself in 2001 (stayed at Calle Cronista Lecea) walked that neighborhood many times by myself, never felt unsafe. Very good restaurants towards the Aqueduct.

Thanks, Chatters. Can you give me the names of some of the restaurants you thought were good? We were planning on dinner one night at Jose Maria.

Jose Maria is fabulous (good choice), their cochinillo (roasted pork) was better than Candido's, which by the way, may be touristy, but it is certainly a must see while in Segovia (if it's good enough for Antonio Banderas...:-D). Their wine selection is exquisite as well. Another restaurant I thought was tops was Duque (Calle Cervantes). For late night drinks, La Floresta near Plaza Mayor seems to be popular with locals and visitors; good ambience. Hope you have a great time in Spain.
