Hostels for Families?

My family and I are planning a summer trip to Potugal and a friend highly recommends staying in a hostel w/our children (13&15). She said we would enjoy the evening activities and energy. The particular hostel where she stayed has private rooms w/private bath available for 4-guest.

I would appreciate any feedback on families staying on a hostel.
Thank you!

We stayed in apartments or B&B's mostly.

(I don't like hostels)

Stay at an apartment instead.

The "evening activities and energy" might not align with your expectation.

We (2 plus 3) almost always stay in hostels. Your teenagers might be a bit young to enjoy some of the evening activities, which often involve a pub crawl. But there may be a sign up sheet for a shared dinner or some music. Hostels come in many shapes, sizes and styles.

Our kids have always had interesting conversations with others in hostels. The locations are usually excellent. The employees are almost always enthusiastic and helpful. I suspect staying in hostels will encourage your kids to travel on their own in a few years. Our daughter just returned from Porto and loved it.

In return you may give up some space and it can be a challenge to avoid people, if you feel like solitude.
