Honeymoon-Trying to decide if Provence and Amalfi coast is too expensive to do and too much travel?

Trying to plan our honeymoon..First thoughts were to do one week in Francerovence and one week in Italy: on Almalfi coast. We are finding it is more expensive to get a nice place to stay in Italy and we would have to fly from France to Italy...any advice on to get the most for our money and to minimize travel?

Beth, That is too far. Fly into Nice and out of Nice or Milan and make the Ligurian coast your other destination.
I would stay in either Santa Margherita or one of the Cinque terre villages if you are into hiking and nature. Of course, see the Cote d' Azur enroute. I really see 3 destinations here, and 2 weeks will give you good time to enjoy.

Bob,

Thanks for the advice. We choose S. Italy and Provence since neither of us had been before.
My fiance has already been to Santa Margherita and Cinque terre villages, so if we do Italy we want to stick to southern italy. Neither of us has been to France and we have heard great things about Provence...its a tough call because I have always wanted to got to Italy.

Beth,

You could do one week on the French Riveria,(I'm a big fan of Nice) then fly out of Nice to Naples, which is what we did two years ago. It's a very short flight from Nice-just over an hour. For the Amalfi Coast, if you're finding that area too expensive, you could base yourselves in Sorrento, where there's a much wider range of accomodations, then do day trips to the coast, Pompeii, Capri, etc. Have a wonderful trip!

Why wouldn't you want to fly from France to Italy? Because of the money? If you want to get to southern Italy from France you're going to have to spend something, either time or money.

It's your honeymoon, why not splurge? I'd say fly from France to Rome or Naples and have a wonderful week on the Amalfi Coast.

I would suggest skipping the Amalfi Coast and spending both weeks in Provence, or moving on to the Cote d' Azure. We have been to Provence and/or the Cote d' Azure each of the last four years, and we have not run out of things to do and see yet.

I don't have anything against the Amalfi Coast, but I would recommend the French Riviera. It is also much closer and you can drive there, rather than spending a day flying to Italy

Beth,

Congratulations!! What month is the honeymoon. I have been to both the Amalfi coast and to Provence. Both are TRULY exceptional. However, Here is what I suggest. For your honeymoon. I would go to Paris and just eat up Paris. It is romantic and fun and you love being in love in Paris - for 5 days. Then fly or take to super speed train overnight to Nice. Then rent a car for a week and do the Cote-d'Azur. Stay in Ville-franche sur Mer and go to Eze and Monaco and all the fun places in between. And Juan-les-Pins, Cannes, St.Tropez etc. Or.... fly to Marseilles and visit Provence - which we did last year. I suggest the above, but in provence we rented a villa outside of Arles, and day-tripped to the "villages." It was wonderful. But, I like the other itinerary better for a honeymoon. Provence is more sightseeing all the time. The Cote-d'Azur is more relaxing and fun. You crash on the beach one day and in the evening go to cafes. The next day you get in your car and explore the hill towns of Grasse and buy some perfume and then to Eze for the scenic fun and watch the old men play Bolle in the square and go shopping. Oh la la.

Save Positano for an Italian trip. Go to Rome, marvel at the Vatican, eat non-stop, drive to Pompeii and do the ruins and then to Positano and the Amalfi Coast. Please let us know what you do.

Thank you all for your advice.
We researched flights from Nice to Naples and found they are $800 a piece.. so based on that we are leaning very heavily towards staying in France and making the Amalfi coast another trip. We could think of a lot better things to spend $1600 on such as nicer hotels and food, etc.

We are going the first two weeks of May on the honeymoon. The weather may be fine but I dought it would be beach weather. Also, we are not big beach people one day is enough. This is why we choose Provence not the French Riviera...

The suggestion to see Cote d' Azur would probably compliment Provence nicely
