Just to suggest a somewhat less expensive alternative to the driver from Rome -- on our honeymoon we took the train to Naples and had a driver meet us there for the drive to Positano.

Luggage may be a concern for honeymooners. Wait until you are new parents and take, in addition to your suitcases, a porta-crib, stroller, car seat, special kid stuff and a baby. On a train. You'll wonder why the size of a suitcase seemed so critical . . .

Well said Suze. It's about what you're doing on each trip. And in this case the OP is "socializing" with her new husband and no doubt wants the pictures to look nice. If it fits in the car trunk, you'll be fine.

My husband and and I and our teenage daughter are going to Greece later this month. We are traveling VERY light, bringing old clothes, we can discard if we want, and some favorites, and will buy some new clothes if we need them (our teenage daughter likes that since she can bring home some clothes from vacation, this year she will get a new swimsuit from the Greek Isles.) Afterall, there is noone we need to impress since we will never see those folks again.We carry everything on going to Europe that way our luggage will not get lost. (Yes that has happened a few times, a trip downer. Luckily we had carry-ons with a change of clothes and few essentials) We traveled to Italy a few years ago and we went by the rule - "You bring it, you carry it". That being said, we each brought a rolling suitcase that would fit in the overhead bin on the airplane and one small carry-on bag that would nicely fit on top of the suitcase when we were rolling it. It worked out great, we went to the laundry once, washed things out at night, and took the opportunity to buy a few items along the way we could put extras during the trip in the fold up duffle bag I packed in my suitcase. This took up just a little room. We all used packing cubes which we now swear by. We never rented a car and went by train and taxi everywhere. In Venice this worked out so well. I am not sure what we would have done if we had more or bigger suitcases. This year in Greece we are swapping our small carry-on bags for backpacks since it was difficult to balance the carry-ons on top of our rolling suitcases especially across the bridges in Venice. Many years ago we traveled with large suitcases and came home with 50% of the things never used. We could not fit everything in rental cars and ended up with things on our laps. Heck at home we always wear our favorite clothes why would we change things on our trip?

I doubt Robyn will be taking old clothing to discard on her honeymoon trip!

This is one instance in which I would take a larger suitcase and make sure it is filled with lovely new things. Have a wonderful time!

And she can also take a smaller suitcase and a fold up duffle bag and buy some more lovely things she can bring home

I like both ideas....the idea of buying a new outfit while away but I am still going to bring a few nice things I own now and love. I would prefer to NOT check our luggage as I fear losing it. I did the throw away t-shirt thing when I backpacked a few years ago. Great idea but not for my honeymoon. That being said I also tend to overpack whereever we go...then I wear my 3 or 4 favorite tops over and over again...yet I always want to have EVERYTHING with me ya know just in case! And it always happens you don't need it! I think my fiance is considering a backpack vs a roll on but I am not sure if I want to travel that way again. Thanks for all the input!
