Honeymoon Itinerary
 

First, I would like to thank all of the fodorites that have helped us plan our honeymoon! My fiance and I have come up with an itinerary and wanted to run it by the forum:

Venice 3 days, Hotel: La Calcina (already booked with frontal and side view of Giudecca canal room!)

Cinque Terre 2 days, Looking to book in Villa Steno

Tuscany 4 days, looking to stay at The Hotel Belvedere San Leonino, in San Leonino.

Rome 3 days, looking to stay Albergo Del Senato.

We were back and forth between spending 3 days in CT and 3 days in Tuscany or spending 2 days in CT and 4 days in Tuscany...would love any advice on that. I am thinking more in Tuscany because there is more to see and do...but I have heard wonderful things about CT too.

Krista, It all depends on your transport and time traveling to the CT.
If you do not get an early start you will arrive in the PM and only have one day there to do much. If that day is bad weather then you are shot down. Are you driving? If not,have you found good connections on the trains? Overall, I like it. You just may be rushed at the CT.

Your itinerary is a good one.

We stayed at the Hotel Belvedere this past March and enjoyed it very much. The room and bathroom were very large and the property is just beautiful. I'm not sure if you are aware or not, but they do not have air conditioning...just in case that is an issue for you.

As Bob mentioned, travel time is important. Spending two days in any one location is shortened incredibly by travel time, not only getting there but then traveling to your next destination. But if the destination is an important one for you, then go for it. We don't always mind the extra destination because we always enjoy the trip itself...there is always something new to discover along the way.

My preference would be to leave the trip with 2 days in CT and 4 in Tuscany.

We were planning on taking the train from Venice into La Spezia and then jump on a local train into CT...any idea on how long the travel time for that would be?

Depending on the time you leave and the type of train, between 5 and 6 hours. You can now better see how travel time can take up a good portion of one day.

Actually--door to door--you are talking 7 to 8 hours. And, your best connection may not be via La Spezia. Look at the routes via Milan and then into Monterosso. The train trip will be more than 6 hours with 2 changes.

I highly recommend 2 days in CT and 4 in Tuscany. While in Tuscany be sure to spend a day in Florence.

We could not seem to make up our minds, so we decided to tack on an extra day (3 in CT and 4 in Tuscany)What the heck...it is our honeymoon and it is Italy. Thanks everyone!

Nothing to add concerning your itinerary, but that's a GREAT way to start your honeymoon (corner room at La Calcina in Venice)! If the weather is good, ask at the front desk about reserving the tiny rooftop deck at some point in your stay. There's a great view, and lounges and table and chairs, and they fix it up with cushions etc. before you go up. The breakfast is quite nice also and served in-room, on the terrace over the canal or in a charming little dining room off the lobby. There's a small bar for cocktails.
