Honeymoon in Rome - spending money, etc.?
My fiance and I are traveling to Rome from Nevada for our honeymoon. We'll be gone 9 days total, two of which are travel days. I've dedicated $2,000 ($1,400 Euros, approx.) to our spending fund. Airfare and loding have been paid for, and what's left are breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, traspo (couple cab rides, a train ride out to Florence, and mostly walking), museums and shopping. We're also taking a cooking class in Rome for 65 Euros. With all that being planned, should I allocate more for spending or am I in the right ballpark? We're staying in an apartment.

I'd allocate for a little more.Italy can be expensive and so many unplanned things come up and being on your honeymoon you dont want to be stressed thinking about money.Besides, if you dont spend it all it is always nice to come home with some leftover money!

I think if you keep aware of your budget while you are there, then you'll be fine.
Staying in an apartment makes a huge difference - you'll likely be having breakfasts in and possibly a second meal back at the apartment. Restaurant meals CAN be very expensive ($200) or you could have pizza, and wine for two for about $25. You might want to save that "splurge meal" for the end of your trip. You can get very good wine from a grocery store for about $5. The bakeries are worth a daily trip, and the food in the stores and markets is very good and very inexpensive. The two RT train tickets to Florence will be your biggest expense - you might do that early in your trip so you know what's left for the remainder. I usually spend my last shopping for souvenirs to spend the "leftover" money I had budgeted. |
Thank you!
$2,000 is the absolute minimum. Anything else we collect at the wedding will be extra! Another question: do you recommend purchasing the train tix prior to our arrival? I've been researching the bullet trains, in particular, and think we might go with the Raileurope route. Should we do it now or later? |
If you are just planning a day trip to Florence, I would recommend that you wait until you are there. I would want to choose my day to travel to Florence based on having nice weather, and you really won't be sure until you are there.

No, don't get the train tickets in advance, particularly from RailEurope. Waste of time and money. And, as mentioned, you want a nice day for travel to Florence, so just go to the station and buy a ticket a half-hour or so in advance (check out schedules online beforehand). Train travel in Italy is easy and cheap.
