Bermuda shorts? Pants in Rome, Venice, Florence?

Bermuda shorts? Pants in Rome, Venice, Florence?
Aside from churches, will we find that people will consider us rude or inappropriate if we wear bermuda shorts for touring in Rome, Venice, and Florence? In the evenings, will the more casual restaurants frown on longish shorts and sneakers worn by our kids to dinner?

I sure hope not...because that is what we plan on for our vacation in 20 or so days. I think as long as you look neat in appearance and as you mentioned, wear pants in Churches, and Vatican you'll be fine.

tourists always wear shorts, no one cares what tourists wear while just sightseeing (barring Catholic administration of some places, like the Vatican museums or churches). Kids dress that way in hot places everywhere if it's just some casual place to eat.

Just a note...if you buy the pants that have zippered legs at the knee you will save yourself a lot. I saw a gentleman turned away from St. Peters when he took his wife's shawl and wrapped it around his lower half.....not much different than a kilt. They turned him away.

Venice is crawling with badly dressed tourists, so no problem there. (That didn't come out sounding the way it was supposed to.)
Florence seemed pretty informal to me.
Ditto Rome, except for places like the Vatican, as noted.

We were just there (2 weeks ago) and saw men and women in shorts in churches - including St. Marks in Venice. the only thing they seemed to be worried about was shoulders (saw some people turned away for this). This was true in Florence and Bologna as well and some of the smaller churches in Rome. We didn't go in St. Peters however. It's hot enough that you will want to be in shorts - just plan your church days for shoulders
