Plan your own trip using tripadvisors.com and slowtravelers.com. You'll have more freedom than if on a tour and stay in places that are less tourist traps. Try Hotel Teatro Pace Roma 33 in Rome; Tourist House Ghirberti in Florence, Palazzo Ravizza (sp?) in Siena; Locanda Orseolo in Venice, and Casa Astarita B&B in Sorrento.

IF you can manage the time, I'd plan it yourself. When we got engaged last Dec. I soon realized how much time and energy just getting the wedding details squared away and handed off the task of organizing the honeymoon to a travel agent. Our travel agent was wonderful and really went out of her way to insure we had an outrageous trip. That said, I enjoy the research and planning and wish I had been able to work everything out myself. We probably ended up spending more money because we went through a TA but I just couldn't juggle planning a wedding, working full time and getting the honeymoon together. My husband works long hours and isn't the travel planner so I couldn't count on him for that ;-)
We were in Italy for 13 days and saw Rome, Florence/Tuscany and Venice. Our favorites were Tuscany and Venice. We loved staying in a villa outside Florence although we could've picked one a little more central or broken up the time between the wine country and staying in Florence itself. The place itself was so beautiful and romantic--Villa La Palagina--but it was a schlepp to get into Florence due to the traffic on the A1. Venice, too, was wonderful and romantic. We stayed at the Hotel Kette in Venice. Personnel was very nice and efficient, our room adequate although the bed was kind of soft and the room had a bit of a musty smell.

Lake Como is a must! Super romantic and very laid back!
Hubby and I took 10 days and 1 backpack and just traveled the train and used our Rick Steves book to get places to stay for the next days. This is not very "planned" but we had a blast just doing what we felt like without being tied down. I suppose we spent $120 US per day but we weren't going to $$ respaurants and buying stuff.
