I haven't been to Rome yet (this will be my first time) - only northern Italy - Venice through the Riviera. From what I've heard the hotels there can be a bit pricey - I'm sure there are other threads here that can give you a good idea of places to stay.

My husband and I were in Rome in late March and we planned the trip last minute also. However, I had to write to about 30 hotels to even find 5 to pick from. We ultimately wound up at Hotel Abruzzi directly across from the Pantheon. It was not luxurious but it was nice enough and the location was great.

You should go to Venere.com. Plug in your dates, sort by price and see what's available. I'd defiitely book something at least for the start of your trip.
Just wondering, are you flying rountrip Rome or oen jaw?
There's a book called something like "small and charming hotels in Italy". I suggest you buy it (or similar) and bring it with you if you haven't pre-booked hotels. I've had pretty good luck with this book.
