Honeymoon hotel in Rome

I know that there are a zillion postings on hotels in Rome and I promise I have already done a search and got a few ideas. But... most of the postings aren't asking quite the right question and without trawling through every single hotel recommendation I can't be sure whether they are what I'm looking for. I need to find a hotel for the first few days of our honeymoon at the beginning of September next year. We are NOT looking for a big posh hotel - definitely not our style, but for something small, friendly and with a bit of character. The kind of thing that in England might be called a "boutique" hotel, though I'm not sure whether that means anything to Americans? Our budget is about $US200-250 per night for a room, but less would be even better, and we could stretch to a little more for something really special. Location is important too - somewhere fairly central to the main sights. Thanks for all your help!

hi anna, I was with my family in rome(early october) at Hotel Giotto Flavia, near the station (termini).In few minutes you can reach the main sight. I think it has everything you desire (it is like a boutique-only 14 rooms, they are very pleasent).I got a price of $140 per night. I stayed for a night last week at Albergo Cesari, on via di Pietra, just off of via del Corso, which is a good location. $100 a night for a single. It was a boutique hotel, quite nice I thought. You can find their website through www.venere.com.

Anna, Since you are going in early September, I would recommend you a hotel with a pool, that is not far from the touristic sites, like the Aldrovandi Palace ( it's not really pompous, as the name suggests), or the Parco dei Principi. Both hotels aren't really boutique hotels, but they are charming, and the pools and pool areas are lovely. The Aldrovandi has a free shuttle to the Spanish Square area. It's at the border of Piazza di Spagna/Fontana di Trevi, a quite central location, very convenient for sight seeing. HAVE A GREAT IDEA FOR YOU! ONE THAT I WISH I HAD USED MYSELF FOR OUR HONEYMOON. THE HOTEL IS CALLED THE "CARRIAGE" AND IS LOCATED VERY CENTRALLY OFF THE SPANISH STEPS. BUT THE THING THAT PUT ME OVER THE EDGE WAS THAT THEY HAVE A ROOM AT THE TOP OF THE HOTEL THAT IS LIKE A PRIVATE CONDO. I BELIEVE IT WOULD BE WELL WITHIN YOUR PRICE RANGE, AND FRIENDS OF MINE HAVE STAYED IN THE ROOM......WE ACTUALLY STAYED IN THE HOTEL IN A ROOM NEAR THE ROOF WHERE WE WOULD HAVE ACCESS TO THE ROOF GARDEN, BUT THE ROOM ON ITS OWN WOULD SEEM TO ME TO BE PERFECT FOR A SMALL "BOUTIQUE" CENTRALLY LOCATED HONEYMOON SUITE!! I went to grad school in Rome at Loyola's campus based up in the hills of Monte Mario. The Hilton hotel there became a haven for us to get away from the crazy undergrads. They have a wonderful pool and topnotch restaurant. Play up the its our honeymoon thing and bat your eyes at the front desk - they will give you the moon - they do charge for cabanas and towels for guests at the pool. Its a very convenient bus or taxi ride down to city center near Piazza Navona - enjoy Rome is wonderful and in Sept the city starts to wind down a little from tourist season.

I second the cesari. We had a room in the hotel all of last week. It is a "boutique" hotel. Very clean rooms and friendly, helpful staff. The can arrange cars to/from airport if you wish. Can't beat the location..midway between the Trevi and Pantheon on a pedestrians only street. We could walk everywhere and did! I suggest booking early through venere.com. We anguished over this for a month as I'm sure you are doing. We spotted a few of the hotels we were favoring and were very glad we chose the Cesari over all of them. Paid about $145/night for a double. Decent size room, modern bath, small sitting area, good storage, minibar and AC (which we didn't need but I'm sure you will in September). good luck!

Believe it or not, I'm the third supporter of the Albergo Cesari! My boyfriend is from Rome and we've stayed at the Albergo twice. The owners of the hotel are friends of my boyfriend's family. Very simple, clean rooms, extremeley helpful and kind staff and the most ideal location available! Enjoy Rome!!

Wow - thanks guys, there's loads for me to check out here. I'll definitely have to look up the Cesari with all these recommendations. One more question - has anyone stayed at the Art Deco hotel? It looks lovely on its website, but if anyone has any personal experience I'd love to hear it.

We got off to a good start when they e-mailed me promptly with all the details. It’s a small hotel (28 rooms), but very European. In fact what sold me on this place is that the Romantik hotel chain which caters primarily to Europeans. Don't let that word chain scare you off - there's nothing remotely chain-like about it and not many Americans or American Travel Agents had even heard of them. The quality was superb. But then I did want a bit of a splurge. Although my Single Room had only a twin size bed, the room was beautifully decorated. The marble bathroom, was huge (as the bedroom area). I had: a tv, fruit basket (that was replenished throughout the week), phone, wardrobe, desk, safe, plenty of mirrors, lights and blankets which came in handy because of the AC. The staff was professional yet warm and always pointed me in the right direction. I came to depend on them for their suggestions. The location couldn’t be beat, right off of the Piazza Barberini (beautiful fountain), down the street from the Spanish Steps, around the corner from the Via Veneto and plenty of transportation (buses and Metro) nearby. For a treat, well worth every penny and I would go back here if I had the extra money to splurge again. Happy hunting!
