Honeymoon Help - Sicily
My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon and we will be going to Sicily for a week and then to Athens, Santorini and Crete for another week and a half. I have been doing a lot of research on Sicily and I can't decide where we should go - please critique!
Arrive Palermo - stay 2 nights Drive east, stopping along way, to Milazzo where we'll take ferry to Aeolian Islands - stay 1 or 2 nights Continue on to Taormina - stay 2 nights Drive south to Syracuse - Ortigia - 2 nights Fly out of Catania Agrigento sounds interesting - should we skip something I have on the list and go there? Any other suggestions? Thanks! |
You can easily go to Agrigento as a day trip (driving or taking the train) from Palermo, but that will mean you lose much of your time in Palermo. I'd do a loop, driving down to Agrigento, then up to Erice and Trapani before going back to Palermo.
Frankly I'd drop Syracuse-Ortigia all together. You're doing a lot of traveling and a minimum of getting out to see things. We spent five days on the go from Lipari and hardly covered the area. Two nights in breathtaking Taormina is fine before flying out of nearby Catania. |
Sorry but I totally disagree with skipping Ortigia. Its a wonderful 1 mile by 1 1/2 mile little island setting with fabulous scenery looking out on the Ionian Sea,quaint and interesting little back streets, terrific restaurants and delightful sights. There is a reason that in classical times it was the biggest and most visited city outside of Athens!(The ruins and ampitheater of Siracusa are well worth a visit also.)I agree that if you are driving then do a circle route but I think that the Aeolian Islands could possibly be taken off the list to keep Ortigia on.

I agree that you should keep Siracusa on the itinerary.
It is a lot of moving around, however, and I would skip the nights in the Aoelian Islands and spend the time in Taormina. You can do a day trip to the islands from Taormina, either on your own - bus to Milazzo, hydrofoils between islands - or on a bus tour that takes you to Milazzo, and goes to Lipari and Vulcano by boat. The islands are small and you can see quite a lot on a day trip. I did one and it was quite enjoyable. |

Thanks for the advice - I have a few questions.....
How long is the drive from Palermo to Taormina? And then how long from Taormina to Syracuse? Is Agrigento worth seeing? How about Segesto instead of Agrigento? Thanks! |
