Honeymoon destination advice please...

Planning a honeymoon for October of 2006. We want something unique - not just Hawaii, Virgin Islands, etc...

We were thinking about Greek Islands (which one!?), or Madeira perhaps. Island / Ocean locale would be best.

I would like something not crazy expensive (getting there and hotel) and perhaps a place a bit off the beaten path. Relaxtion with some sights to see, but not where we'll regret not seeing this ruin or that museum. Planning about 2 weeks - oh yes, decent Oct. weather too...Europe is ideal but not necessary...

So, any ideas?

Thanks,

Andrew

I haven't been to any of the following places I'm suggesting, but I was contemplating where to go for my honeymoon this month. The several places that popped up are:

Greek Islands
Malta
Croatia
Sicily

The only concern I had was whether October is rainy season in the Mediterranean. (BTW, we are going to Venice instead because we could only take 1 week off.)

go to thailand...perfect honeymoon destination.

be careful with the greek islands...many destinations there are just cheap sun and drink destinations for europeans (for example, faliraki is a nightmare). http://www.greekisland.co.uk/
provides some good, honest opinions.

October can be dodgy weather in the Greek islands.

Very early October you may be alright... but check it out - a friend got back from Crete just yesterday and told me the hotel she stayed at is closing for the winter next week, and it was very windy the last 2 days.

I've always thought Madeira was a place you visited once you were collecting your pension...

Sicily might be worth looking into, everyone I know who has been there has enthused about it, but I've no idea about October weather.

I've recently come across this website which has 'stylish and romantic' hotels across Europe - and they have some on Sardinia, and elsewhere in Rome, Venice and Greece.

Anyway, congratulations on your marriage, and wishing you all the best for a very happy future together.

We did Santorini in Oct. and loved it.

We just returned from Sicily and the late September weather was exquisite. We absolutely loved Sicily! The weather sites indicate that October is a rainy month in Sicily, however.

We went to Italy for our 3 week honeymoon last year from Oct 23-Nov 15th. PERFECT weather! If you search my name, you will come up with a long trip report. Good luck and congratulations!!!!!!!!!

This isn't exactly off the beaten path, but I recently spent two days in the Amalfi Coast region and the whole time I was there all I could think was that it would be a lovely place to stay in while on a honeymoon. Very romantic with its stunning coastline/scenery.

Hi A,

For a two-week honeymoon in Oct, I suggest the first week in Paris or Venice and the second week on the Amalfi Coast.

Malta or Corfu are really nice. Depending on how you like to travel, both can be quite reasonable.

I can't recommend Madeira enough. We spent the last week of October at the Crowne Plaza resort in Funchal and we had a great time. Weather was nice, hotel was excellent, food very good, lots to do - hiking, sightseeing, etc.

More romance.
We Just came back from Venice where we got engaged!!!!!!!!!!
First we was touring the Italy - Piachenza, Turin, Genoa and Milan where MSD(my sweet darling) had few performances - he is a music professor and plays piano. Tour went great and he had very good revues.
Then we went to Venice... and MSD got us a Gondola (he is incredible romantic)and he asked gondolier if he can sing and cute venician fellow said "I better no to" and laughed ...and we all laughed...however he was a great guide and told us many interesting things...and when we was under the Bridge of Sights MSD whispered "Will you Marry me?" AHHH...YES!!! answered I. There is a saying supposedly if you do it under the Bridge of Sights your love will last forever and we intend to keep this way... It's my second marriage, I was waited for him so long and the best part is folks HE IS WORTH IT. So now we are happily planning the wedding on summer and honeymoon of course. And here are few ideas we came up with:
1. Costa Rico - very beautiful and affordable not saying cheap.
2. Slovakia - very beautiful and very affordable example: price per 1 person for 3 weeks was $1,000 included air, hotel all meals and spa...and don't forget famous beaitifull glass which is as great as Murano but much more cheaper.
3. Baku, Azerbaijan...very exotic, very affordable most expensive think
is a ticket(last time I spent $900.00 going vea Turkey) and will eat caviar with spoon, yeah it's that cheap-$50.00 per lb. I know it, I'm from there..caviar sandwich is affordable and popular like PB & J here.
4. Brazil..? Never have been and always wanted...
So that's all so far.
We welcome any other suggestions.

Best wishes to everyone and great Holidays.
