Hondarribia, Iketxe and the pyrenees
We're interested in staying in the Hondarribia area at Iketxe in early May next year. How soon should we make reservations?
We're flying into Barcelona, driving to Collioure, then working our way across the Pyrenees. I'am having a bit of trouble figuring out how long we'll need to work our way across to the Hondarribia area.
Any suggestions on a reasonable amount of time to do this?
Thanks so much.

images2,
We just returned from a two week farmhouse rental in Hondarribia, our first year not staying at the Iketxe, only because we needed a whole house.
Although Patxi and Fátima at the Iketxe are always busy, particularly in the summer (for which we reserve after Xmas, even before the next year's rates have been established), for early May you should be safe making your reservations by February.
And tell them that Laserna sent you (Patxi calls me by my last name).
From Collioure to Hondarribia, I would take
D 117 at Perpignan through Quillan, Foix (with detour to delightful Mirepoix), St. Girons to the A 64 at St. Gaudens. Then on the A 64 through Tarbes and Pau to Bayonne, where you catch the A 63 to exit 7 for Hondarribia (airport exit).
The A 61 from Narbonne thru Carcassonne to Toulouse might actually be quicker but less interesting because you miss the Eastern Pyrenees.
I would check the driving times at
www.viamichelin.com to decide which route would be best for you.
I could take forever on this trip, going back and forth from France to Spain through the mountain passes of the Pyrenees. It's spectacular scenery with lots of interesting detours. The area from Collioure through Prades, Vernet-les-Bains, Villefranche-le-Conflent, Mont Louis, LLo is simply spectacular.

Thank you so very much Maribel. I really appreciate your reply.
I think we will take 2 to 3 days for the drive and I've been running possibilities on viamichelin using StuDudley's advice. Thank you Stu.
We have 1 week in this area, which will be our 3rd and final week of this vacation.
You've been a great help.

Stu Dudley's advice is truly invaluable. He was a tremendous help to me in Provence last summer, and he knows the route from Llo to Collioure so well!
If you're interested, I have a file on the Basque Country (both Spain and France) here that might be helpful with day trips and sightseeing/dining suggestions:

(you may have perused it already)
Happy travels in my favorite neck-of-tthe-woods.

Yes, Maribel, I'm using your fabulous Spain guide already. Thank you. We are going to drive from Barcelona to Collioure the first day. We've already spent several days in Barcelona, so we'll not go into the city again. It is truly wonderful though.
I'm interested in looking into Llo. I just found the B&B someone recommended there. Maybe it was Stu. In my initial plan Llo wasn't included, so I may have to backtrack. We have lots of time to plan since we don't leave until April 21.
We've just returned from Hungary and Croatia, so if any of you are interested in those fantastic countries, I just finished a "book" of a trip report on the Croatia board.
Thanks so much again, I'm sure I'll have more questions to come.

Yes, yes, yes!
Stay in the gorgeous Cerdanya countryside in tiny Llo. We spent 4 days at Stu's recommended hotel, the Auberge L'Atalaya with charming MadameToussaint, a very gracious hostess (and we had memorable meals there as well). The walk from Llo to Eyne is lovely. From Llo we made the same journeys as Stu and took the Petit Train Jaune from Mont Louis to Villefranche-le-Conflent. This was a perfect spot for exploring this spectacular area of French Catalonia.
