St Andrews Day is celebrated in Scotland by almost nobody except elected representatives who get yet another chance to spend other peoples money.
I'm proud my countrymen's determination to steadfastly ignore this silly jamboree.
As for homecoming, Sheila, a shorter word for "extraction" is "race".

Good grief, you REALLY got out of bed the wrong side this morning, didn't you?
"St Andrews Day is celebrated in Scotland by almost nobody except elected representatives who get yet another chance to spend other peoples money."
I ALMOST agree with you, on this one, but not quite. It's still the Saint's day, and that has always been marked in Scottish Catholic Churches, and, for all I know, Pisky ones, too.
But over the last 10 years, I'm not sure yu're right about not doing St Andrews Day. There are guys in Union Street today wearing kilts and they're not in parade (and it's Baltic out there, believe me!); and something's going on in Union Terrace beyond the International Market. I know. I'm trying to work.
Your last point is outrageous! The Scots are not a race (well, not one race, anyway).
Extraction is from "extractus" - "drawn [in the sense of pulled, not pictured] out".
This is a big deal for Scots tourism next year. We shouldn't highlight it?

He sang in Darby O'Gill and the Little People - and Doctor No
All I can say is that it must be part of the job spec that Bond must not be able to hold a note (as anyone whose seen Mamma Mia will testify)

I think it's a great ad, although there are other, perhaps better-known Scots they might have used. I have no problem at all with Sean Connery. He's one of the best-known Scots on the planet.
I hadn't heard that song until yesterday, when I saw the ad for the first time. The ad had me in tears, then after I searched Youtube for the song, I was a mess. Don't underestimate the effect things like this have on we ex-pat Scots. This isn't aimed at you who are still living there. I sent it on to a Scottish friend who also lives here in San Diego and it had the same efect on her as it did on me.

Sean Connery isn't exactly a Scottish name is it?
If he were American he'd be banging on about his Irish heritage.
BTW, I am prepared to be corrected by people like Patrick, but I have never heard an Irish person refer to St. Paddy.

Perhaps they should have used:

(Josser, not sure if you meant me, but my name comes from Scottish family rather than Ireland, so I have no view on that question, beyond a certain English reserve at using diminutives for people I haven't been introduced to. Anyway, I still haven't quite got over the way some older generations in my family called me Patsy as a child - even in the 1950s that wasn't on any more).

Did you see Joyce McMillan's article in the Scotsman on Saturday, Sheila ? Spot on, I thought - it's good to celebrate, but we must beware the danger of getting sucked into celebrating an outdated vision of Scotland and not recognising and celebrating the new, more multicultural Scotland.
There was quite a lot happening round here at the weekend - all the NTS properties plus some others like the zoo were doing free entry, and there was a knees-up in Princes Street Gardens. Did you see the M8 sheep turned blue to mark the date ?
(For some reason I've recently also been remembering the 'It's Seventeen in Aberdeen' poem which was in the paper a few months ago - did you see that ? I thought it was brilliant.)
